The World Food Program says at least 6.7 million Zimbabweans, more than half the population, will need emergency food aid in coming months to avert mass starvation.

Mugabe says the food crisis on a drought earlier this year, while most analysts blames political violence and disruptions in the agriculture-based economy during the government's program to confiscate thousands of white-owned commercial farms that now lie virtually idle.

What is not mentioned is that the food-shortages are not just the unintended consequence of stupid government policies; they are precisely THE INTENDED consequence of well-thought-out policies. So long as the Mugabe government controls the distribution of food, they get to divert it to their political supporters. The point of the agriculture destroying policy is to starve the political opposition into death, submission, or emmigration.

Mugabe on Thursday promised to enforce a widely abused government price freeze on most goods to slow record inflation, officially estimated at 144 percent but seen to be much higher.

Ignoring of course the reality that inflation is always the result of governments INFLATING the money supply by printing and floating more currency. Imposing a price freeze on goods during an inflationary period will produce almost instant shortages of those goods.

Mugabe clearly WANTS an economic melt-down in Zimbabwe, and his policies will surely deliver what he wants. It is a tyrant's means to render the citizens under his complete and total control, and thus be at his mercy for their very survival. By this brutal mechanism he seeks to control the mind of men.
