Resign from the Senate and give it to the Dems again?"

There is an obvious connection in this whole situation that no Republican has the doo-dads to bring up and no Network Anchor will touch. Both Trent Lott AND the "Grand Old" Senator Thurmond were DEMOCRATS when they espoused any RACIST views.

Why do they keep referring to Strom Thurmond as some kind of wonderful grand patriarch if he was a racist. What does Senator Byrd think about all this? Why do they forgive Strom Thurmond for what he has said and done in the past and not Trent Lott. Hmmm, could it be.... politically motivated?

**I would have thought this whole essay was an "ellipsis." **

I had a difficult time following her thought processes in this one, too. I am usually impressed by her writing, and look forward to seeing her on the tv circuit.

Sam Francis article at v-dare dares to actually look at the "worse case" scenario of Lott's remarks in contrast to this bit of blubbery moralizing. No one asks if the media's hysterical propagandizing will have any negative effects, will we end up with a riot like LA or what? Negative stories about blacks are shoveled under for fear of white back lash so why are we not worried about black backlash or does the media crave that particular evil?

"I think she all but called him a closet racist, with a penchant for talking about it in code. Once you decide that, "the good of the party" has nothing to do with it... you just don't want the sumbitch around. Hers is one of very few commentaries -- that isn't just leftist name-calling -- to say this out loud."

Noonan essentially not only did say, "dump the racist 'sombitch' Lott," but clearly inferred that NOT to dump Lott would be betraying the cause of "freedom" and perpetuating the cause for civil rights. I for one would rather hear a "leftist's name-calling" -- at least it's a frontal attack.

This essay was sheer hyperbole and propaganda if you read between the lines. Shame on Noonan.

I agree with what you entirely on the Senate Majority Leader issue. From my vantage point he hasn't done much for the team even before this episode. However, the hysteria generated for the mindless masses by the demogogues needs to be countered and the demogogues need to have their dirty laundry aired. It's a war of personal destruction and a lot of demo people need to feel the pain. Even if Lott resigns he will need to correct his record by pointing out his recent stand on equality (hopefully he has one). He should get some black people from Mississippi saying "yes that is what he said , but look at all the good things he's done," etc. Defuse and discredit the demo attack and counter attack and also resign because he can no longer be an effective leader. Bring someone in who carries a big broadsword and really wants to use it.

Then why doesn't the NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Salon and their ilk dictate to the Democrats who their leadership should be???? The members of the Senate are the ones to make that decision. Concensus of the pudits should not dictate how our government is managed!!!!

Peggy has done it again. Thank you.

Yes, Lott should step aside as Majority Leader. As someone elsewhere has pointed out, all he need do is NOT run for that position when Congress reconvenes.

A little snippet tonight in a Carl Cameron spot on Brit's show (the affable Jim Angle filling in for Brit): something to the effect that the White House did not want Lott to resign today because it would set off a succession battle.

The implication, to me, was that the White House did want Lott to resign (the leadership) some other day, i.e., after the succession issue was worked out so as not to have a bruising battle when the Senate opened.

Anybody else hear that comment?
