So what exactly was Bush supposed to do ? -- the media is having a feeding frenzy over the "Lott issue" -- Bush is making his first public appearance since it all "blew up" -- was he just supposed to give a standard speech and hope nobody said anything ? Esp. a speech in front of a largely minority audience ? I don't call this pandering -- I call it damage control -- and damned good damage control at that ! He obviously is pissed at Lott (who is an idiot), but he hasn't called for his resignation as ML -- Lott is a big boy who needs to take his medicine -- I hope that he can get through the mess in one piece.

He should not have made it sound like he was in agreement with the rhetoric being used by the liberal establishment. But that's exactly what he did. Bush came across like he was an outraged Democrat. Under the circumstances, I would have appreciated it, if the President would have kept his mouth closed and not gave credence to the political correctness or race baiting tactics of the liberal elites. And it was pandering, plain and simple.
