Trent Lott must resign

``I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either.'' --Trent Lott at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party. WASHINGTON--Trent Lott must resign as Senate majority leader. It's not just that no one who has said this can lead an American political party. It's that no one who could say something like this should be an American leader. It is a pity that a long and distinguished career such as Lott's should come to this. But there is nothing you can do to Lott's statement--turn it, twist it, flip it, spin it--to make it any less appalling.

Man I am undecided on this one guys:

One side of me says we need to stand with our guy against anything the left throws at him, just a page outta the Clinton/Monica book - "This is a private matter between Lott and the people of Miss.". You know when Clinton spoke the other day and said how the Dems shoulda stood behind Dashole when he was viciously attacked yada, yada, yada. I think the left has perfected this actually during the Clinton years and I think its time we tried it as conservatives for a change....

The other side says that they are right about Lott and he is just a dumb old cracker that will never change his spots.....

Yet a third side says, We need to dump his arse for the good of the party. Which I have felt since the impeachment fiasco, he has been a really crappy leader anyway, this could be a blessing in disguise for our side!!!

Welp thats two to one he's outta there.

The GOP and all good conservatives gain by getting rid of Lott as Leader of the Senate. He is building ships nobody wants including a cruise ship for the Navy. He wastes money cause he can and he gives up power because he is a coward. He is too stupid to be in charge.

For everyone that says,"Look at Al or Jeese" or some other goofball in the Democarat circle of idiots... those comments sound like six year old kids. People want leaders and they generally don't know enough history to care that other people said something just as bad last year or ten years ago. We are fighting a battle for the minds of people in the future and people hear Lott and think of the past.

Get rid of Lott and you have the start of Less Spending by Republicans.

However, if Lott resigns and does stay...and a more conservative senator takes his place as leader, then Chafee and Snowe have a reason to bolt.

Well, you can only be in charge of yourself, as my grandfather used to tell me.

Lott should step down as Majority Leader. If his ego or prestige won't let him stay in the Senate as either Minority Leader or Majority Leader, then his fellow Repubs in the Senate need to remind him to think of the Bush Agenda as a whole - the big picture. Lott being Majority Leader is not as important as Lott being a Senator. And besides, there is no way that his comments rise to the level of him resigning. Not from this perspective.

As far as having a reason to bolt, I've seen numerous reasons for Chaffee to bolt. He's not bolting. Chaffee is a pork monster. "Show me the money" is what he is looking for, and perhaps some sort of Committee leadership position. Fence-riders are a little light in the "principled stand" department. Chaffee will not leave because of a more conservative Majority Leader - he will leave if he is dissed and if his state is affected in funding approved by the Senate.

I think I would save the tar and feathers for my own Congressman or Senators.

Actually, since he is Senate Majority Leader, I have a claim on him. Tar and feathers it is.

Good day.

It all hinges on how Limpa-Lott handles this. So far, not good. Based on past experience, Lott the coward and traitor could screw the GOP on the way out. Somehow, I doubt it though. As for the liberal-to-mushy-moderates and their inability to deal with real leadership, what's the difference? What a weak argument to say that we must have a weak, cowardly, ignorant-RAT-bender in order to get anything done. In fact, that says it all.

Well said, Apes!

Sad to say, Trent Lott's position relative to Tom Daschle can best be characterized by a look at Sydney's Pride Parade from last year....

I'm sorry, folks, but I'm simply disgusted with Lott. Not only was he an ineffective buttocks-boy for Butch Tom Daschle, but he folded up like a cheap card table during Impeachment and has made it difficult for Bush to push through his agenda.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

"As for the liberal-to-mushy-moderates and their inability to deal with real leadership, what's the difference?"

IMHO, a really big and important difference.

I don't pretend to know the deal making that will take place between "conservative" and "moderate" Republicans. --But, I do know unless these "liberal-to-mushy-moderates" retain the "R" after their names, Daschle...not the President... will decide the agenda the US Senate follows.

I will go on record as one who does not want another two years of obstructionism.
