What if they introduced a species that never belonged there?

Then it's not restoration.

wild fires were natural where you live at one time. Would that be just putting the natural enviroment back in order?

Letting naturally started fires burn would be proper. (Actually, my preferred way of 'celebrating' Earth Day is putting up a poster showing a wildfire and the caption "do what comes naturally".) If we somehow artificially prevented all lightning, then it would be proper to deliberately restore lightning to start fires the way nature intended.

There's a live Algore thread, and Kerry wants Lott to resign. Seems pretty slow but for the middle of the week it's probably average. The Arianne 5 was destroyed during launch; it's something but not all that important with the depressed heavy satellite launch business. A week until the next major earthquake/volcano period if the last series didn't relieve stresses enough. Otherwise SSDD. That means Same Song Different Day for those with tender sensibilities. Life goes on.

We were in Yellowstone about 3 years ago & did not see one single elk, moose or antelope. We have always seen them in previous visits. What we did see was buffalo, herds & herds of buffalo. Apparently they are co-existing with the wolves.

I would imagine that if you have coyotes, you don't have wolves...just like if you have mice, you don't have rats.

Ever seen "The Trap," with Oliver Reid and Rita Tushingham ? There's a great "fighting the wolves" scene in it. Certainly spice up one's camping trip !

Excellent movie, with some realistic situations, locations and costuming. A Muttly favorite.

Thanks for the link.

"People do not need to be nervous about the fact that a wolf may be in the area," said Craig McLaughlin, mammals coordinator for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. "Wolves do exist in the same areas people do, but they're shy and will do everything they can to avoid someone. The risk to public safety is very minimal."

McLaughlin reminds people that gray wolves are listed as endangered on the federal Endangered Species List and may not be harmed. "Anyone who sights a wolf is asked to call the nearest DWR office," he said.

Because gray wolves are listed as endangered, they are under the management authority of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"Hello, DWR?  A wolf is carrying my child away.  Please come and control your wolf."

The only ones worried should be the surviving deer, elk, moose, and bighorn sheep...but from the article at the top we see the moose have already been killed.  Lessee how much does an elk weigh?  Compare that to the size of a man or a child.  No, no, nothing to worry about here -- The government is in CONTROL.

Worth saying again:

The public has a right to know why former Yellowstone National Park Superintendent ignored Congress' instructions and the warnings given by Delphi 15. Only a Congressional investigation will be able to determine whether or not there was a Quid Pro Quo exchanging jobs for our wildlife, achieving a political end.

Well good then I hope lighting strikes your home, and enviroment. You will have a back to nature experience.

They have alot of explaining to do, but ask them to explain and the groups like Defenders of Wildlife cry out. They love it because it brings in lots of money. Remember, FOLLOW THE MONEY.Defenders of what wildlife? This situation proves that they really aren't for wildlife. Why are so many people, even conservatives so brainwashed by there propaganda?

So charitable of you to say so. So kind of you to wish ill upon me instead of trying to get my point.

Nature gets pretty screwed up when we try to control it. Declare a "no forest fires" policy, and enough tinder & fuel build up to devestate everything (see the great Yellowstone fire about a decade ago). Eliminate a critical predator, and overpopulating prey similarly screws things up.

Point is that when you start seriously trying to redirect nature, you usually regret it...and perversely forget what ultimately caused you grief in the first place.

I grew up in Idaho, and see wildlife every day of the week, but it still thrills me every time I see it. I even love the pesky deer that eat my garden every year. Where I live people depend on Elk meat to get them through the year, but they love them too. Yellowstone is a place where many people get to experience seeing these animals where they might never get to otherwise.

You now I often hear the same argument that we should not interfere, only it is applied to foreign affairs in places like Iraq and elsewhere because there are often unforeseen consequences.

Maybe I missed your point, did you agree that the wolves are detriment to the enviroment as the writer is trying to point out?

I really wouldn't wish a wild fire on anyone.I thought you were saying the let it burn philosophy is the the one you agree with? It was the let it burn mentality that caused hundreds of homes to burn in Hamilton Montana, and other places a couple of years ago. I am pretty sensitive to that because living in the west we see too much of it. It is too bad that man ever started messing with nature, but they did, and have to in order to live with it. When Yellowstone burned it was terrible no one had cared for the garden, but overprotected it. There was too much fuel, and the fires burned too hot. Where we live the forests are seriously ready for one of these catastrophic fires. I am not saying that the let it burn isn't ever called for but I'd like a real forestor to make that decision rather then some wacko.

Thanks for those links. I try to find articles like this to help me explain to people why I believe what is happening to our county.
