Looking up in the outback
Tourists watch a solar eclipse Dec. 4 in the Australian outback town of Lyndhurst, about 700 kilometers (435 miles) north of Adelaide. The town was one of only four in Australia where the total eclipse could be seen.

Thanks for the ping, Diogenesis.

The "Inspectors" are led blindfolded through scrapyards while Iraqi soldiers snicker and pee on them from catwalks above.
That's inspection the wrong way.
Inspection the right way is a B-2 visit from Santa to three dozen "palaces", followed by SEAL teams inserted under the watchful eye of AC-130 gunships.
When we end the current farce, drop the hundred Hollywood letter writers and Jimmah Benedict Cahtuh on Baghdad, each duct-taped to a BLU-118 thermobaric Hall Mark Greeting Card.
Smiley Two-Moles in the portraits is the gasser of thousands--wrap him in bacon and bring him back to the Crawford ranch for bar-be-que.

Actually, that is a Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), M249 Light Machine Gun
Primary function: Hand-held combat machine gun
Manufacturer: Fabrique Nationale Manufacturing, Inc.
Length: 40.87 inches (103.81 centimeters)
Weight:
With bipod and tools: 15.16 pounds (6.88 kilograms)
200-round box magazine: 6.92 pounds (3.14 kilograms)
30-round magazine: 1.07 pounds (.49 kilograms)
Bore diameter: 5.56mm (.233 inches)
Maximum effective range: 3281 feet (1000 meters) for an area target
Maximum range: 2.23 miles (3.6 kilometers)
Rates of fire:
Cyclic: 725 rounds per minute
Sustained: 85 rounds per minute
Unit Replacement Cost: $4,087
Features: The Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), or 5.56mm M249 is an individually portable, gas operated, magazine or disintegrating metallic link-belt fed, light machine gun with fixed headspace, integral bipod and quick change barrel feature. The M249 engages point targets out to 800 meters, firing the improved NATO standard 5.56mm cartridge.
The SAW forms the basis of firepower for the fire team. The gunner has the option of using 30-round M16 magazines or linked ammunition from pre-loaded 200-round plastic magazines. The gunner's basic load is 600 rounds of linked ammunition.
Background: The SAW was developed through an initially Army-led research and development effort and eventually a Joint NDO program in the late 1970s/early 1980s to restore sustained and accurate automatic weapons fire to the fire team and squad. When actually fielded in the mid-1980s, the SAW was issued as a one-for-one replacement for the designated "automatic rifle" (M16A1) in the Fire Team. In this regard, the SAW filled the void created by the retirement of the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) during the 1950s because interim automatic weapons (e.g. M-14E2/M16A1) had failed as viable "base of fire" weapons. Early in the SAW's fielding, the Army identified the need for a Product Improvement Program (PIP) to enhance the weapon. This effort resulted in a "PIP kit" which modifies the barrel, handguard, stock, pistol grip, buffer, and sights.
That young 3rd COSCOM soldier may well be female. I also wish her well, and hope she bags her limit.

Now here's a very frightening combination of acronyms:
PMS...
and
SAW ("Squad Automatic Weapon")!!!
Be AFRAID, Jihaddists;
Be VERY afraid!
I wonder what the eternal fate of one of these Jihad "martyrs" is supposed to consist of if he gets whacked back to Allah by a Woman!?
I don't see this Heroine (if I may be permitted the use of such an archaic term) donning a burqua any time soon.
Seriously though; I speculate that the situation for a female combattant might be similar to that of a Union "Soldier of Color" fighting in the American Civil War;
Should things go sour for their Unit, "surrender" is NOT an option they would even want to consider.
In one of the oft-rerun video clips of AlQuida in training, we notice their distinctive black flag. Now at one time, the "Black Flag" was tacticly significant; It meant, on no uncertain terms, that "No Quarter" or option of live capture would be granted the Enemy - and by the same token, none expected should their enemy prevail.
For hundreds, if not thousands of years of Military tradition, the appearance of a black flag on a battlefield signalled the onset of an extremely ferocious and bloody engagement, in which no prisoners were taken. The term "Massacre" is frequently used by later Historians to describe them.
The only options for those engaged were Victory or death - or possibly escape for a few very lucky non-winners.
One Military Historian who studies the history of the British Empire and it's escapades in the Middle East writes us (and perhaps someone here could verify or expand on this) that during the First Afghan War a British expiditionary Force of about 15,000 men found things going badly for them, and began a retreat from Kabul South towards their base in India.
Only ONE (1) bedraggled Redcoat apparently managed to make it back to India alive. I'll bet that HE had some PTSD to deal with!
The same Historian speculates that those 1853 Enfield Rifle-Muskets shown in the last edition being sold in Afghanistan may well be some of the few remnants of that British Unit - those and some well bleached bones out in the desert somewhere.
Those Iraqi "soldiers" (and here I DO use the term between quotation points loosely, Bob - hope you don't mind) during DS where not the "black flag" crowd; when and if our Troops should ever meet the latter in Battle, I would hope that they take the color of their flag very seriously... for I have little doubt but what the bearers of said black standard WILL.

" Do you think Clinton is jealous at not having a carrier named after him?
How about the 'USS YELLOW STREAK'"
Yeah! I think you're on to something here, Mate!
Here's the deal; we take that North Korean tramp steamer the Spanish Navy recently delayed for us, and after we get all of the Scuds etc. off of it (see related thread on that - very interesting!), we convert it into a floating SEPTIC TANK.
Hey; all of our Warships out there in the Persian Gulf etc. have to pump the bilges somewhere, eh; and we wouldn't want to go polluting the pristene ocean waters thereabouts, would we? What would the Environmentalists say?
Just pump the old tub right up to the gunwhales with Allied crap and send it wallowing off to... oh, I dunno... Yemen?
And paint the name in big, bright yellow letters on both sides of the bow, high up where we can still read it when she's full;
"WILLIAM J. CLINTON"
Now as to registration... I'd hate to see a U.S. flag on the bloody thing; how about France? Just a thought.
Any other ideas?
Keep those creative juices flowing, fellow Freepers; I love it!
