What about spelling?? :)
In high school, students must read literature, i.e., novels, poetry, etc., not just learn spelling, grammer, and sentence structure.
(spelling comes first, of course) : )

Don't try to silence him. Do what I do. Find a topic that you enjoy and master it. Use what I call the "why? technique. Although it may be annoying to your teacher, it won't seem disrespectful. For example, if he were to say that the second amendment to the constitution only guarantees the right of states to have militias, ask him why the 2nd amendment doesn't say anything about the states. Or, why is every other amendment an inidvidual right yet, the second is a collective right? Why did the founding fathers go through the trouble of outlining the rights of inidividuals, yet deprived the same people of the ability to enforce those rights under a tyranny?
These are of course rhetorical questions. Not only do you have to know the answers to all the questions but you also need to anticiptate what a liberal is going to say. Keep in mind that you will probably not change your teachers opinion, but those around you will see you dominate the debate and will gravitate towards your side.

Liberal teachers are a dime a dozen. I sure wouldn't worry about it or get agita or anything. I told my kids to let me know whenever they heard anything in school from a teacher that "just didn't sound right". I also would keep track of my kids' subject matter and make sure to give them the correct take on things. We would often have a good laugh together at the teacher's expense.
But most important, I always told my kids to puke back out on their tests whatever liberal crap the teacher wanted to see. Just make sure to get an 'A'. I told them to keep their mouths shut, try to understand that their liberal teacher was just a scumbag, smile and pretend to buy every liberal chunk hurled at them, and puke it all back out on their test - - just get the 'A'.

Remember, your wife's grandmother had every right to be a Communist. This was/still is America, where people enjoy freedom of association. McCarthy forgot that important fact or rather, disregarded it.You're certainly right she did. And she was a really wonderful person, her sole shortcoming was that she was rather naïve, if not self-delusional, about the realities of Communism.
But do you remember Ellsworth Toohey in The Fountainhead? He did basically nothing but sit around and hold meetings with students and write book reviews and editorials (#20), but he wound up holding the strings to the key elements and leaders of the society.
This list of Communist goals is from the 1963 Congressional record. Look at numbers 1, 2, 3, 17*, 18, 19, 20, 21 (e.g., film schools), 25, 26, 29, 30, 31, 39, and 41, with an eye to the kind of influence that a teacher has over his or her students, and in light of the first post in this thread.
Not all overthrows of government need be violent.
17 - "Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks."

The problem with these English teachers is that when they go off the reservation they don't do the job they were hired to do and that is to prepare you for college. In my junior and senior years in high school, I had teachers who did not make us read any books or write any papers. All we did was rap about stuff. Mostly about our parents and how "rotten" they were. I did not participate in the verbal exchanges. I sat like a lump and wasted two years when I should've been polishing my writing skills. As it was, I was so unprepared for college English I had to take remedial classes.Communist Goals:
#40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
#41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.

Pick apart the anti-war article and counter-argue it. Make your case strong and your logic tight. It won't convince the teacher, but to refute it, he will have to sidestep reason. Doing so, especially publicly, shows him for what he is: emotional, judgmental, and ultimately, unfit to be a teacher. His "victory" is his defeat.

As to McCarthyism, show him why witch hunts aren't limited to torch-bearing villagers looking for communists under State Department beds. Point out that today's witch hunters are more likely to be wearing Tom Daschle's face and exhorting the mob to burn Rush Limbaugh at the stake.
It might also enrage your teacher if you point out that the so-called "witch hunts" of Joseph McCarthy proved in many cases to be entirely correct. I have volumes of decrypts from KGB files that PROVE the State Dept., Hollywood, and the Department of the Army were rife with communists.
It ain't a witch hunt if you find the witches!

Have your parents homeschool you.
Find a homeschool support organization in your area.
There you will find encouragement.

Someone in the district administration will probably get upset that he is an "English" teaching who is not spending his time n class teaching English as per the state standards (FL's "Sunshine Standards"). If you write a letter to the superintendent and frame your complaint this way, you may get a response. Also, cc the local newspaper and maybe they will publish your letter (and also, thereby, force the superintendent to respond to you). Good luck!

Vertigo,
You are living proof that no one can FORCE you to accept their abberant beliefs. I am proud of your ability to recognize the flaws in lefist group think, but I want you to look at this situation as an opportunity to develop critical thinking skills. The effort will serve you well for your entire life- and you may look back on this teacher as the impetus for your future choices. Not all role models are positive.
Remember, too, that the founders protected free speech- ESPECIALLY the speech we hate to hear. You don't want this deluded soul silenced- you want him converted- or marginalized.
And you can do that- but only if you work hard at learning the truth to dispell his lies, understand the fabric of history which refutes his distortions, and assemble the arguments to dismantle his premises.
High school literature is filled with leftist authors - we've all suffered through them. I learned the value of appealing to emotion to make a weak case from Miller (and Steinbeck and Dickens and Sandburg and others).
You can learn a great deal from people whose views you abhore, and you should. Avoid at all costs the temptation to discourse only with those who share your views: it will make you weak and lazy.
You have the potential to be a force for right- for conservatism- and we old ones will need you to to guard our rights in the future.
You are doing just fine- be strong and smart. GG

He made us read "The Crucible" (written by communist Arthur Miller)and analyze the main theme behind it, McCarthyism. This one should be easy.
Ask him if he's ever read Hollywood Party, by Kenneth Lloyd Billingsley, Prima Publishing Co., ISBN 0-7615-1376-0

Tell your English teacher to teach English and to leave his personal viewpoints for another time and place. You must admire the cleverness of having students read propaganda to analyze non-fiction.
Although I would have characterized the examples as fiction masquerading as non-fiction.
To: Publius6961
Having students read in order to push a particular viewpoint is nothing new. It is a tried and true tactic of the left in our schools.
