I don't understand. Your example is of someone being deliberately misquoted. Trent Lott is being quoted correctly, and you refuse to aknowledge the meaning of his words.

I'm asking a ficticious hypothetical. Do you think the hypothetical I asked in # 53 is a fair interpretation of that quote? Do you think anyone could be conceivably justified in calling someone a "racist" for that quote?

The meaning of Senator Lott's words are deliberately being twisted -he would have to be a complete d*mn fool to have intended what he is being accused of meaning. Being mean spirited or raciest is not one of Lotts faults.
As far as his wimpish leadership up until now, I believe he assumed the democrats would recipricate in kind, to good manners and fairness. He has a chance to prove himself now, with a modest majority, and hopefully has learned the folly of sharing the power with the democrats.
