I wish they would make up their minds. Then, he said it was the Freemasons. Or the Illuminati. Or (fnord) something.

The backstairs nutjob literature of late 19th century, early 20th century European extremism, is the whole political thought of the modern Arab political class. It is so crazy it is sometimes hard to credit it, but it is what is really going on. Arendt in "Origins of Totalitarianism" is the only writer I know of who has really given the phenomenon its due. Everybody else basically averts their gaze; unable to respond with anything but sputtering or slang, we just shut up instead.

The fact itself has to be squarely faced. Enourmous numbers of average people believe that fairy tales so preposterous healthy seven year olds laugh outright on hearing them, are the inner secret of all history. Which is indeed an "outrage to common sense", but is nevertheless true.
