JDAMs make dumb, iron bombs smart, and turn strategic bombers into close air support assets.

I would be interested to know if we still have serviceable ordnance from the 1942-45 era. Seems to me the casings would be rusted and the explosive deteriorated and unstable after this long.

As recently as the late 90s, the warehouses were full of WW II dumb bombs. Still serviceable. Rosie knew how to make 'em. We're gonna run out of Arabs before we run out of dumb bombs.

A JDAM costs $25,000.

JDAMs are for pin-point accuracy. Dumb bombs are for counter-terror.

In WW II, we bombed Switzerland and Czechoslovakia trying to bomb Germany. The Germans bombed the Republic of Ireland trying to bomb England. Heck, there was only the Irish Sea between them and their target. That's close enough for government work. If a crew is assigned to bomb Iraq and they plaster Iran instead, is either of us going to hurl ourselves on the funeral pyre? I'm not.
