I am looking for a safe, conservative community for my family. I live in the middle of liberal La-la land and homeschool my children. There are some changes in our lives and I now have to work and the children need to be in schools. They are not going to be quite as supervised or protected as before and I need to provide a safe community for them. I have a gifted and talented daughter who could take college courses. I have three younger children who I need to place in good public or Christian schools. Safety and conservative culture are two major factors here. Any input from Freepers would be gratefully received.
TOPICS: Crime/Corruption; Culture/Society

My daughter attends Southeast University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Small town (Rush's hometown), University is fairly conservative for a secular college and there are several solid evangelical churches in the city. I was a pastor there for 4 years. Freep me if you want more info.

You are probably right - but next time why don't you private reply - we want all the conservatives - but we don't want to attract a bunch of liberals who think we need to be 'educated.' (joke)

Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie.
You won't have to worry about where our kids are at night; they'll either be inside or frozen to death.
Hillsdale, by the way is way over-rated as a conservative or Christian College. While it plays up its conservative credentials for fundraising purposes, its faculty are the usual gaggle of leftist loonies and it recently dismissed its president for carrying on a sexual affair with his daughter-in-law.

"I have heard of Grove City College. It is actually a community?? Any Grove City people out there who can tell me more?"My wonderful son is a freshman at Grove City right now. I know many who have attended there and think of it as the very best years of their lives...say they would love to start them all over again.

I spent my undegrad in Lincoln, NE, and loved it. It's a college town of around 200,000 (two Christian schools in town and the U of Nebraska) - pretty conservative place, not crowded, and very low crime. Lots of churches (where people still go). It's big enough that you can find most of the shopping and entertainment you could want, but also 45 from Omaha and 2 hrs from KC.

For what it's worth, you can't find a much more moderate community for raising a family than Omaha. If you're looking for excitement, pizzazz, kapowza ... it ain't here. But it's a fairly conservative, robust city with all the advantages of larger metropoli but without many of the drawbacks. Schools are creeping twoard PC, but as yet mostly uncontaminated. There are several small colleges in the city, including one Catholic girls' school (College of St. Mary's). And I'm told there is a state university in Lincoln, which is about an hour southwest.
Nebraskans are mostly a conservative lot, although they occasionally lapse and elect a Bob Kerrey. It ain't paradise, but at least it's not Iowa.

Taylor University in Upland, IN. I can't say enough good things about the school - Lifelong friends, 95% conservative professors - at least in 90-94 when I attended.

Ricks is a good idea, though these days they call it BYU-Idaho. It's now a four year school whereas it was 2-year when it was still Ricks.

Depending on your needs, Dartmouth College and the Upper Valley area of New Hampshire might be a good choice. Dartmouth has a reputation as being reasonably conservative, and while Hanover itself is perhaps somewhat liberal, the surrounding areas and local and state governments most certainly are not. My wife and I live about half an hour south, in Claremont, and homeschool our 3 boys. A very supportive region for homeschooling. There are also some quality community colleges, such as Keene State College, in the region. We've recently moved from ultra-liberal Amherst, Massachusetts, region ourselves. Happy hunting!

"I live in MAINE, Ace...I KNOW snow!!!"Well come on down to New Hampshire! Whattya waiting for? We're always looking for new Christian Conservatives to beat back the influx of Massachusetts socialist/atheists. There are some lovely communities here and, in the last election, NH Republicans won everything from Governor to State Reps. The Massachusetts liberals are now avoiding NH once again and heading for Vermont. We are ecstatic! (but we'll need to remember to help out the Vermonters in the next election).
If you want any more specific info, e-mail me by private reply.
God Bless...

Mississippi State University. It's primarily and engineering and ag school, therefore less liberal pantywaistes in the humanities departments. No topless bars in Starkville, Mississippi. Represented by Chip Pickering in the House. No anti war protests. Strong ROTC program. On the anniversary of 9-11 the undergrads covered the front of a men's dorm with a makeshift flag. :)

I don't know what you are qualified to do so I can't speak about the job opportunities. I know there are places around here that hire such as chemical plants, power plants, Toyota. The living however is like living 50 years ago. It's pretty conservative even though WV still votes Democrat. That's because of the mines and unions. The county I live in is GOP. You can check out my profile page for some pictures and a bit about our town. My hubby and I have lived all over (Nashville, Atlanta, Memphis, Richmond, Montgomery, Jackson, Lynchburg, and more) and we absolutely love it here. We love the small-town "community" feel where people watch out for one another. Everybody knows everybody and talks about em. That's great because the kids can't get away with much. We have two good Christian schools; one here in Pt. Pleasant and one just across the bridge in Gallipolis, Oh. Within a 45 minute drive you can be at a super mall in Huntington or Charleston. In two hours you can be in Columbus, Oh. We have numerous hospitals within easy reach. The University of Rio Grande is 12 or 13 miles over in Oh. It's small, but nice. There is a college at Charleston and Marshall Univ. at Huntington. We have a satelite campus of Marshall here in Point. I live on Main St. where I can walk two blocks to downtown. One block to a 5 star restaurant. The community takes it's schools seriously. The parents are fully involved. They shut down an attempt to consolodate the three high schools in the county, because it would destroy "community". God bless em. What have I missed? Oh, real estate is whatever you want to pay. We almost bought an investment property a while back for $8,000. A one bedroom house on an acre of land. We paid $48,000 for our ten-room, 5 bedroom, three bath, full basement home. Newer homes will run from $75,000 up, but there are plenty of older homes that sell pretty cheap if you are willing to remodel them. Did I mention that these people go to church? Anyway, as one who has lived and traveled most everywhere, I can vouch for the quality of life offered here. I didn't post this on the thread because I don't want too many people to discover our little corner of the world. God bless you in your quest.
