Looking For a Nice Safe Community with a Fairly Conservative College

I am looking for a safe, conservative community for my family. I live in the middle of liberal La-la land and homeschool my children. There are some changes in our lives and I now have to work and the children need to be in schools. They are not going to be quite as supervised or protected as before and I need to provide a safe community for them. I have a gifted and talented daughter who could take college courses. I have three younger children who I need to place in good public or Christian schools. Safety and conservative culture are two major factors here. Any input from Freepers would be gratefully received.

Your post reminds me of something a friend told me. He went to Baylor about 20 years ago on a football scholarship. He was there for almost two years before he realized that it was a Baptist university. He found out when he took a job as the campus representative for the local beer distributorship, and an advisor called him in to his office and suggested that maybe it wasn't a good idea to wear the beer gimme-caps and t-shirts on campus.

I stand corrected, there is one more Seventh-day Adventist college, it has the distinction of being academically the best historically Black college in the USA.

That of course is Oakwood College, soon to be Oakwood Adventist University, at the very pleasant good-sized city of Huntsville, Ala. which is also very job-rich and has a good state Univ and another Christian college in the area as well.

This is in far northern Alabama near Tenn. A large govt installation, NASA rockets I think, is there too.

Transylvania College, Brevard, NC

Western Carolina College now Univ, at Cullowhee, NC this is west of Asheville deep in the mtns;

A little known fact is that of all States in the USA, the one that takes in the most college students from elsewhere, compared to the number it has homegrown, is ...SOUTH DAKOTA!

There are state colleges at Rapid City and Spearfish, and both private and state schools are numerous but small because so few live there. You say you liked cold winters, and no crime, and the population grows so slowly, out on the plains there are houses standing empty, that you might just get to move into.

The Catholics I think are still trying to operate Yankton College in that town, and also a branch at Watertown, but I am not sure there is a conservative Protestant school left in SDak.

Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich. is often called the highest rated conservative Christian college in USA, but I think there is a very conservative Lutheran school at Decorah, Iowa, too.

I'm partial to my newly adopted (2 years ago) hometown of Golden, CO. The public schools are excellent (among best in state) and the town is gorgeous. Yes, this is where they brew Coors beer (which provides a strong tax base). Golden is the western-most town in metro Denver area (right up against foothills of Rockies). Population is about 17,000 and it has it's own quaint western downtown. Colorado School of Mines is an excellent engineering school. I'm not 100% positive but I believe it's fairly mainstream (neither terribly liberal or conservative) and has an excellent academic reputation, beautiful campus, and small classes. I can't say living here is cheap, though, compared to many of the other towns suggested. But if you want scenic beauty, good schools, TONS of stuff to do, etc. it can't be beat.

Here's a little more info on some of the SDA schools. First, you're required to take religion (12 hours at least), and SDA doctrine is not forced - all Christians are welcome. Second, chapel is required, especially for freshmen and sophmore students. There is usually one chapel during the week and another on friday evenings. All schools maintain a strict "substance" policy - no drinking, smoking, drugs, etc. As well as this all schools maintain a pretty strict curfew - every eveving by 11:00 first two years (1:00 on Sat, night) - and beds are checked.

I can't speak for all SDA schools, but here is a little more of what I know about some of them. If you're looking for the most conservative Southern is the way to go. If you're looking for a mostly black school Oakwood or Columbia Union college are almost all black. The California schools are more liberal and PUC, being in the middle of "wine country" can make for trouble for some :-). A nice happy medium is Union College (in Nebraska), and one little tidbit about Union: the last 10 years everyone that has finished their pre-professional program has gone onto medical, dental, vetrinary, etc schools - 100% placement (that's if you can finish of course).

Not only that, but the opposite sex is not allowed up to rooms. It might be easier to get into Ft. Knox, than past the lobby of the girls dorm. :-)

Asheville is NOT conservative. Neither is UNC-Asheville. Been there. Extremely liberal!!! However, Mars Hill College in a tiny tiny town of Mars Hill, 20 miles north of Asheville is conservative baptist.

Boone and Appalatian State are LIBERAL too. Been there as well. Transylvania college in Brevard NC IS conservaive but note it is a 2 year school.

That is a strange comment, considering that I have not seen any Texans trashing you. All of the mudslinging is coming from your end. :o)

Cedarville College, Cedarville, Ohio. Very rural area (but 30 minutes from Dayton). The college is right on the edge of the town. Lots of good churches, including the school's. Conservative, Christian, and excellent academics.
