STATEMENT BY: GOVERNOR JEB BUSH
REGARDING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE PEARL HARBOR

Friday, December 6, 2002

"Sixty-one years ago, our nation was suddenly and viciously attacked, and America was forced to win a war we never sought in the first place. Today we face the same challenge. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have spurred us to confront a great evil in the world that is a direct danger to Americans and to all freedom-loving peoples around the world. We celebrate the sacrifice of those of the Greatest Generation who answered the call after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and our prayers go forth today for the American men and women protecting our freedom both here and abroad. Let December 7th always remind us of the price we must pay to be free."

Much appreciation to our veterans, who sacrificed a lot so that we may be a free society today. We mustn't let their sacrifices go for nought, but we must respect what they did and keep ourselves free.

Especially thankful for my uncle who perished in Italy on May 29, 1944; my childhood friend who was killed in Vietnam in the late 60s; and my wife's father, who received a purple heart for injuries he suffered in January of 1945 in Luzon.
