But it's not necessarily that simple. Landrieu is an LSU alum, and that counts for something to certain LSU people, particularly since Terrell's a Tulane grad. The antipathy between the two schools is such that there are people in this state who simply will not vote for an alumnus of one school or the other, regardless of party or ideology. In a close race, little things like that count.

So LSU fans out of the state in Atlanta would have not been the negative that we thought?

Yes, there is a lesser degree of rivalry of the kind that you mentioned between LSU and Tulane in TX -- between UT (Austin) and TAMU (College Station). Rick Perry is the FIRST TAMU graduate to be governor. John Sharp is also a TAMU alumnus. I don't know about Dewhurst. In a close election, football rivalries could matter to 2,000 voters.

and LSU is how many times bigger than Tulane? Also, I'd assume a higher % of LSU grads are from and stay in state. Do you know what percentage of the voters both schools' grads, collectively, represent?

Most LSU grads are stauchly conservative, and I would bet that Terrell would win them overwhemingly. Tulane grads are more liberal generally and thus mosr likely to vote for Landrieu. But most of the liberals come from the northeast and return there after graduation. The remainder of Tulanians, the home-grown variety, are pretty conservative as well.
I am actually more concerned about graduates of Loyola, a pseudo-Catholic institution which brainwashes young Catholics who go there into believing that it's OK to vote for a proabortion Catholic. I wouldn't send one of my kids to Loyola if they offered a full scholarship and a car and a house to boot!

The antipathy between the two schools is such that there are people in this state who simply will not vote for an alumnus of one school or the other, regardless of party or ideology. Hopefully this won't be the case. I went to the LSU game 2 weeks ago to wave Terrell signs. In encountered far more Terrell supporters in the crowd than Landrieu ones, who almost all happened to be the college student women's studies major types. Terrell had greater support from a cross section of the crowd in general, and practically every single one of em was a die hard LSU fan.
