The voters of Louisiana rewarded the hypocritical "Catholic" Mary Landrieu by returning her to the US Senate. The party of abortion, defense weakness, and trial lawyers claims a victory. The win was jiggered by references to a vague sugar deal with Mexico. The consumers of the rest of the country might continue to be gouged by inflated prices for all products containing sugar. But, they might not be. The Republican Congress can fix this egregious inequity. The bottomline - Louisiana gets Mary and the rest of the country gets cheap sugar.

Sugar, plus the two White House beheadings right before the election. The GOP regained the Senate because the public saw that the Democrats had no plan (but to hold up the plans of the White House). The two resignations made the Republicans look like the ones without an effective economic plan.
Plus the debates showed there was just a bit of a haunting similarity between this race and Clinton vs. Dole. That brings us back to the tactical errors that SoCal mentioned.
