Perhaps this link will help. It is a map of the 2002 race for Governor of California. You will see that most of California consists of areas that voted for Bill Simon. Many areas at a 60% clip. In fact, of the few areas that Gay Davis won, in some he didn't even manage to win a majority (thanks to the Greep Party, but still)
