This is sad.
And this thread reminds me of the song 'Vincent' that I used sing all the time for my Mam..she loved it.
Starry starry night,
paint your palet blue and grey
Look out on a summers day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills scetch the trees and the dafodills
Catch the breeze and the winter chiils
in colors on the snowy linen land
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your santity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
Starry Starry Night,
Flamming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
reflect in Vincents eyes of the shine of blue.
Colors changing hue.
Morning fields of amber grey,
Withered faces lined in pain
are soothed beneath the artists loving hand
Now i understand
What you tried to say to me
and how you suffered for your sanity
and how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now.
For they could not love you,
but still your love was true
and when no hope was left inside that Starry,Starry night
you took your life as lovers often do.
But I could've told you Vincent,
this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you
Starry ,Starry Night,
Portraits hung on empty walls.
Frameless heads on nameless walls,
with eyes that watch the world and cant forget.
Like the strangers that you've met.
The raggid men in raggid clothes.
The silver thorn
A bloody rose lie crushed and broken on
the virgin slope
Now I think I know what you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your santity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen.
They're not listening still
perhaps they never will.

It doesn't say which two were stolen?
There's a good chance the thieves won't be caught. Here in Mass., the Elizabeth Steware Gardener Museum was robbed of a number of priceless works of art that have never turned up. This occured years ago (maybe 20). Experts said that certain people 'order' them, pay the thieves a fortune, then hide them in their own very private collections. At the time, Asian buyers were suspected.

It could simply be shopping by a collector who wants a painting that will never be on the market. That's been done many times before.

There are (very rich) people who will buy such art, keep it secretly just for the satisfaction of knowing they have a famous work of art.

This is really tragic. You can look at all the images you want, but there's nothing like seeing the real work.
It sounds like an inside job. What do you bet it winds up in China?
To: MadIvan
Give them back, Bill Clinton.
He's a frequent visitor to Amsterdam because it offers one-stop shopping: heroin, whores, and a heist.

I am a lover of Van Gogh too, I have many books & have visited exhibits of his works in many museums. I have not seen the one you posted. Is it a self portriat in a landscape? Very nice. %;9/>

Thanks for blowing that picture up....now I can see the people and the woman in mourning....which is interesting. I hope the authorities recover the paintings soon.

What's the big deal? These paintings barely look like anything real.

LOL - I do like van Gogh, but $40 million for this:
...does seem a bit much. And those were 1987 dollars, too ;)

These paintings will be used to replace the stolen paintings
Hey - did you know there's a day lilly called Black Velvet Elvis?
To: Maedhros
hope for your sake that everyone here is immune to that word.

Were the thieves Muslims? If not, they may have been doing the world a favor. All the treasured art, the cathedrals and paintings, are all going to be destroyed as hateful to Islam and incompatible with Sharia.
The fate of Europe and its relics of once great glory, will suffer what the Buddhas in Afghanistan did.
Where did you hear that? That would be a tragedy beyond the scope of words.

Where did you hear that? That would be a tragedy beyond the scope of words.Europe is well down the road to an Islamic future. Their legal and illegal immigration streams have long come from nearby N. Africa, Turkey, Iraq, Iran, etc, as opposed to our Latin America. Already, today, the most popular name for newborn boys in Amsterdam is Mohammed.
