Cheney would have been too old to be drafted for Nam in 1965.

Then why were all the deferements neccessary?

I don't know Pete. I suppose the question is whether he deferred from the draft in general as opposed to the Nam draft that started in 1965?

There was a steady draft all thru the 50s as well was there not?

Because the deferments were automatic. I was in exactly the same boat as Cheney, I was born in '40, I was married with 2 kids and working full time and going to school. I did not "apply" for any deferment and I even went to Kansas City for a physical but I was not called up. I sure as hell did not have "connections".
