While this was true pre-9/11, it no longer is. Go to MEMRI and look at the al-Qaeda communiques ("Why We Fight America," for example) and you'll see that post-9/11, al-Qaeda has indeed referred to itself as al-Qaeda.

Also, this was posted on one of their websites, so it may have been only intended for internal consumption, with the "Army of Palestine" being used to confuse the international media.

Good point. MEMRI does indeed have those communiques. I'm surprised because it contradicts several other sources on this issue (as well as the bizarre apparently semantic discussion in the shoebomber case about rejecting the "al Qaeda" label even after he pleaded guilty to his charges). I'm left wondering: does MEMRI explicitly changes the names to "al Qaeda" when they do their translations from Arabic to English to aid the reader's understanding? Are these articles (from the original newspaper sources) all legit? I guess they could have come around and taken up the name - I'm still a little puzzled though...
