Uh, you haven't explained the rest of the question--he hasn't said it to the press while being taken in and out of the courthouse?

Oh, please. Spare us the "you can't retract confessions" routine.

NOTHING prevented him from stating in front of about a zillion witnesses of the press that the confession was coerced.

He did it, he confessed to doing it, and he confirmed it in sworn testimony in open court.

Game, set and match.

Now, due to crowding, he gets to play wife to Pierre in some gross French jail.

It is a suitable punishment, the boy was a loser with a record, IIRC.
