The Christian Science Monitor seems to be under the illusion that the Schroeder who made all those campaign promises is the real Schoeder, and the Schroeder who is now breaking all those promises is somehow less real.

Since when have a politician's campaign promises ever been more real than his deeds and actions after safely getting himself elected? This is the real Schroeder now, leading Germany down into the socialist pit.

Europe is a society in decline. Beset by economic and cultural stagnation and flooded by foreign immigrants, the long-term outlook is grim.

IMO world affairs will shift from revolving around a US-Europe axis to a US-Asia axis, with the decaying EU left on the outside.
