Provide one example where a man remaining in fellowship with God, through Christ, indwelt and filled with the Holy Ghost has degenerated without the man first drifting away from God via Christ and denying the Holy Ghost, by acting or even thinking first independently of God's will.

I think the Vatican remained neutral, indirectly abetting the Nazi holocaust, even after its extent was known.

But more to the point of this thread, the unique authority of God as a stable moral foundation, I could give you dozens of examples (thousands with some research) of Christianity's failure to influence its proponents to maintain the above conditions while they committed atrocities in the name of God. The Spanish Inquisition first comes to mind.

Remember, you asked for examples. I'm not out to criticize Christianity.
