Voter rights highlighted at the polls
INDIANAPOLIS - Lawmakers and state officials are using today's municipal primary elections to promote the "Indiana Voter's Bill of Rights," a new document that summarizes voting procedures and protections.Secretary of State Todd Rokita said Monday he sent posters of the document, in both English and Spanish, to each county so they could be displayed in polling places for the first time. The text of the document was approved by the Indiana Election Commission in March.
The document states who is eligible to vote, procedures to follow if your name is not on a polling list, what rights you have if your eligibility is challenged, and penalties for voter fraud.
One of the provisions says if you need help voting because you are disabled or cannot read English, you have the right to receive assistance. It can be from a poll worker or someone you choose, but cannot be your employer or union representative.
Another provision says if you vote for too many candidates running for the same office or make another mistake, you are entitled to receive another ballot.
"It is our top priority to safeguard every Hoosier vote," Rokita said at the Statehouse with lawmakers and election officials. They included Margie Chavez of Indianapolis, who said the document was important to the state's growing Hispanic population.
