Experts: Arkia Airliner saved by secret defence systems
Ha'aretz Daily ^ | 29/11/02 | Roni Singer

Posted on 11/29/2002 8:52:24 AM PST by the_second_moon

This is my translation from Ha'aretz Hebrew edition:

Weapon experts and intelligence sources claimed today that it was secret defence systems installed on the Arkia airliner, not luck, that saved the passengers.

The Boeing managed to escape from two heat seeking missiles after it took off Mombasa airfield.

"Israel work on plans to defend civilian ariliners from terror attacks since the 70s", told today Igal Eyal from the Hebrew University and a former intelligence agent. "the Mombasa incident looks like a successful implementation of amti-missile technology"

Missiles!

No camo applied. Wrong color for Iran.

I am no expert, perhaps someone can elucidate.

But, it looks like a SA series. Those colors look lie U.N. origin. Probably from the Baltic's.

This technology was available in the late 80s for military fighter aircraft, and later to be used on military cargo planes. Considering all, the $3M per aircraft seems high, unless it has since been further advanced. At the time, the contract price was $78M for more than 400 units, incl many bench and burn-ins; this. of course, was for fighters.

In Mombasa, Kenya, at the airport, the weapon found
whose rocket missed an Israeli airliner.

Hey man, it's Kenya. Maybe it hit some elephant and made an ivory hunter's job a little easier.

On another topic, just heard on the news that Osama just "got dead again". The latest tape is a fake, at least the reviewers are 95% sure of it.

Have to get the thing down range before the rocket motor fires up. There is no blast shield on this launcher.

Otherwise, a crispy critter will be the result.

The latest trend in shoulder fired missile launchers is a "two-stage" boost phase, with a smaller initial stage designed to get the missile clear of the lauching area, followed by a second stage that is the main rocket power for the missile. The idea is to spare the launching crew the force of the main burn when the missile takes off. Seeing one lauched is pretty amusing, the initial "pop" that hurls the missile about twenty feet forward, followed by the "whoosh" of the main rocket igniting. I've seen films of this, which is why I know.

Thanks for the comments. Is the green can CO2 ? At first glance, it appeared to be a dual use- grenade launcher (green can- appeared to be a grenade) and (primarily) missile launcher. On the order of an "over and under". I hadn't been aware of such a system- just guessing at a picture without caption and lacking hands on experience. Someone mentioned a Strelas, and also SA7 was mentioned. Same ? Different ? What say ye ?

It's called "multi-tusking."
