The Left Hates America By Reed Irvine and Cliff Kincaid November 27, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The author of the new book, Why the Left Hates America, told the recent Accuracy in media conference that if some alumni knew what was happening on American college campuses, they would never donate another dime to so-called higher education. Dan Flynn, executive director of Accuracy in Academia, has been run off one campus and shouted down at another while trying to bring a pro-American message to students at major universities. Citing surveys showing that college faculty members are overwhelmingly liberal and leftist, he said their Marxist anti-American mentality is being passed on to their students.

Flynn’s book caught the attention of Fox News Channel host Bill O’Reilly, who had Flynn on the air to help explain the behavior of Hollywood leftists such as Sean Penn. Penn took out a $56,000 advertisement in the October 18 Washington Post attacking President Bush for the war on terrorism and his threat to stage a military strike on Iraq. "I beg you, help save America before yours is a legacy of shame and horror," Penn said.

Dan Flynn told the AIM conference that this kind of attitude is evident on college campuses, where America is viewed as a negative force in the world, even after the 9/11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3000 people on American soil. Flynn said some academics have whitewashed the role of Islam and claimed the attacks were the fault of U.S. foreign policy.

In some cases, it gets worse than that. Flynn cited the Brown University student who said the American flag was a symbol of hate and should be used as toilet paper. On the other hand, when students exhibit pro-American feelings and sentiments, they face strong opposition and harassment. At Central Michigan University, the dormitories were scoured for pro-America symbols and they were then ripped down. At Lehigh University, an American flag was ordered removed from a campus bus. At Marquette, a proposal for a moment of silence in honor of the victims of 9/11 was cancelled because it "might alienate foreign students." Flynn said, "If you hate your country, the campuses are indeed a very tolerant place."

They are also tolerant of bizarre alternative lifestyles. Flynn cited the case of Yale, where ROTC is banned but students can take courses such as "The Story of Incest" or "Drag Queens, Transsexuals and Queers." At the University of Massachusetts, an ROTC cadet had graffiti scrawled on her door. Like Yale, Harvard won’t tolerate ROTC on campus. Yet it took $5 million from the family of Osama bin Laden for an Islam studies program and refused to give it back after 9/11.

The anti-Americanism goes further, to an embrace of communist heroes. Flynn cited a campus library named after W.E.B Dubois, who praised Stalin, won the Lenin Peace Price and renounced his American citizeinship; a branch of the City University of New York that awarded scholarships named after Vietnamese Communist Ho Chi Minh; honors and tributes for Soviet spy Alger Hiss at Bard College and Washington College; and four college commencement speeches given by convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal from behind bars.

Hillary Clinton and the Radical Left***It would be difficult to recall, for example, the number of times I have been introduced on conservative platforms as "a former civil rights worker and peace activist in the 1960s." I have been described this way despite having written a detailed autobiography that exposes these self-glorifying images of the left as so many political lies. Like many New Left leaders whom the young Mrs. Clinton once followed (and who are her comrades today), I regarded myself in the 1960s as a socialist and a revolutionary. No matter what slogans we chanted, or ideals we proclaimed our agendas always extended beyond (and well beyond) the immediate issues of "civil rights" and "peace."

New Left progressives-including Hillary Clinton and her comrade, Acting Deputy Attorney General Bill Lann Lee-were involved in supporting, or protecting or making excuses for violent anti-American radicals abroad like the Vietcong and anti-American criminals at home like the Black Panthers.* We did this then-just as progressives still do now-in the name of "social justice" and a dialectical world-view that made this deception appear ethical and the fantasy seem possible.

As a student of the left, Jamie Glazov, has observed in an article about the middle-class defenders of recently captured Seventies terrorist Kathy Soliah: "if you can successfully camouflage your own pathology and hatred with a concern for the 'poor' and the 'downtrodden,' then there will always be a 'progressive' milieu to support and defend you."* Huey Newton, George Jackson, Bernadine Dohrn, Sylvia Baraldini, Rubin Carter, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Rigoberta Menchu and innumerable others have all discovered this principle in the course of their criminal careers.*** Daivid Horowitz

I don't know. But I love living in the Bible belt. Wonderful weather, low taxes, etc. Our area has alot of executives in it, so the school districts are fairly good too. And I don't feel the local and state governments are prying down our necks at all....at least, not yet.

These freedoms may not always exist in America, They don't exist on college campuses. You cannot criticize the PC. That is the whole problem. So many hypoctites there

I see your point.I only did six months of college -should've stayed.

My wife's employer will not allow anyone to wear rebel flags on their clothes even while producing such things(more hypocrisy in the modern world). That doesn't bother my wife too much, because the rebel flag would mess up her color scheme anyway :-)

I worked at a plant until it closed in 1999 that would crack down on any expression that it thought was white racist, yet allowed African-Americans great slack in expressing anti-white sentiment. One particular t-shirt proclaimed "the blacker the college-the better the knowledge."
