Moscow Refuses to Return Chechen Fighters’ Bodies for Burial

MOSCOW, November 28 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - The bodies of the 41 Chechen fighters who stormed a Moscow theater last month in what they said was a retaliation for Russia’s deadly war against the Chechen people, remain unburied, police officials said Wednesday, November 27, as quoted by ITAR-TASS news agency.

The bodies of 22 men and 19 women had been left in Moscow morgues and it remained unclear if the bodies would be sent to Chechnya or buried near Moscow, given the vehement opposition of some Russian officials to the idea of delivering the bodies to their relatives in Chechnya, as custom dictates, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

The bodies of the 41 Chechen fighters "should be buried in a nameless cemetery in an unmarked grave. Otherwise rebel leaders will turn their funeral into a glorifying show," said Anatoly Kulikov, chief of Russian parliament's anti-terrorism committee.

The 41 Chechen fighters were killed by Russian special forces who ended the hostage-taking crisis by assaulting the theater October 26 and pumping a fatal gas in the auditorium, killing at least 129 Russian hostages in the process.

Russian officials who refuse to return the Chechens’ bodies to their kin for burial say the bodies are kept in morgues for identification purposes, said AFP.

On another front, the United Nations expressed alarm Wednesday at the planned closure next weekend of a refugee camp in southern Russia which houses more than 1,000 refugees from the war in Chechnya.

Russian authorities have said they will close the camp, at Aki Yurt, in Ingushetia - a republic bordering on Chechnya - Sunday, December 1.

While the refugees might wish to return to Chechnya, "they are reluctant to do so at this point because of insecurity and the lack of shelter, basic services and economic opportunities," U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Kenzo Oshima said.

"Returns can only be considered voluntary if no risk exists to returnees' life, safety, liberty or health," he said in a statement expressing "alarm" at the imminent closure of Aki Yurt.

In Moscow Monday, Ingush deputy Prime Minister Magomet Markhiyev said no refugee would be forced to go back to Chechnya.

"All in all, we have received statements by 10,000 people wishing to leave the camps," Markhiyev said, adding that they would be accommodated in private houses.

A total of 110,000 people are estimated to have fled to Ingushetia since the beginning of the second Chechen war three years ago, and 27,000 of them are believed to be in camps. The others are living in rented rooms in private homes or disused factories.

The U.N. is currently providing protection and assistance to more than one million people in Igushetia and Chechnya, Oshima's office said.

Amen. Why can't we do the same. We sent that Pakistani piece of garbage back after his execution and it turned the funeral into an American hatefest. He should of been incinerated at the local animal shelter with the rest of the dogs.

What kind of "religion" is it that supports murdering civilians? If such a "religion" also has superstitions about pigs, why not exploit such superstitions to have the maximum impact on the dumb masses? This can be done without any harm to the bodies themselves. Just bury the bodies, *stage* the "pig eating the bodies" video.

They should show the corpses being eaten on live television all across Chechnya. For that matter across Yemen, across Saudia Arabia, across Egypt, across Pakistan... wherever the diseased philosophy of "killing civilians will somehow advance our cause" has taken root.

Let the punk idiot kids that follow such a death cult see what its consequences are. In whatever terms they understand.

The decision to take the moral low road in "freedom fighting" is essentially saying "OK, I am sub-human scum, I don't deserve freedom." That is the line crossed when Palestinians started hijacking things, that has been a line crossed far too often by Islamic "rebels" (who are more often than not rebels against God) and it really calls into question the whole credibility of Islam.

Is Islam just a cult? A death cult? What sort of religion would condone an attack a random group of citizens?

Is such terrorism the work of "a few bad apples" within Islam or are they a few that speak up for the aspirations of a silent majority?

The leaders of Islam should speak up against the terrorism act perpetrated by these Chechen terrorists. Or Islam cannot call itself a religion, but should properly be termed a gutter cult.

After 9/11, after Bali, after the attacks today, Islam has a few centuries of atonement needed before it can be respected as a religion. Until you see the Imams screaming *against* Chechen terrorists, they have zero claim to a "religious" status.

It is a shame there exist depraved cultures like the one that bred these Chechen terrorists. Whatever happens to their bodies, their souls will rot in hell.

Anthony Beevor's book "The Fall of Berlin" details the recovery by NKVD and SMERSH troops of der furher's remains (fragmented and burned) and their final disposition. He's a good historian and had access to Soviet records, so I'm inclined to believe his acount.

All human behavior is more clearly understood in terms of biology. Just as different species crowd each other out in order to establish a niche for their genes and theirs alone, the various humans races and creeds do the same.

There is immigration. My ancestors were immigrants, they came here and joined the diverse array of cultures in the USA.

I think there is a certain amount of capability for humans to "get along." There are certainly co-existing cultures here today just as the times my ancestors arrived.

Religions at their low points have sunk to base levels of tribalist murder, "kill the non-believer" mentality. Have there been points in the history of Islam where it did not have such a mentality?

I think while Islam is particularly prone to the "colonize the world" mentality, even Islam could be reformed. But do the leaders of the religion want reform...
