That's a myth. Of course like most lazy males, an enterprising engineer will spend endless hours and effort devising a scheme to get out of doing something. Of course in reality more effort was expended coming up with that "better mousetrap," than is actually saved, but that never stops him from trying to invent his way out of work. :)

A truely lazy person would never bother to try to invent anything and merely try to get someone else to do it for them or do without. There aren't many slackers that make it through engineering school.

I don't think that the term lazy in that saying means lazy in the traditional sense. Lazy in the work smart, not hard sense is how I've always taken it.
