I live in AZ... you aren't telling me something I wasn't aware of... Bush has hired hundreds of new border guards since taking office...
On the one hand you are complaining about how huge the new department will be and on the other complaining about how there isn't enough staffing to take care of the problem...

"Senate Republican leader Trent Lott of Mississippi has already said that he wants some changes to be applied to the agency next year, and has gotten a pledge from House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., to revise certain provisions in the next Congress."The agency isn't even set up yet, and already he wants changes. This is Lott getting ready to cave in to pressure from the former "plurality leader" and the Hildabeast. Union protected jobs will make any information coordinating agency totally worthless.

I thought Asa Hutchison was with the WOD department.

"How in the hell will the department coordinate anything without the CIA or FBI in the department?"Uh...the FBI and CIA will be involved.

The border patrol is not the problem, the INS is. Lumping the INS along with 21 other separate agencies into a colussus gubment agency will not solve the problem. My big problem is it sets up an apparatus for the government to spy on average, law-abiding citizens.

"I think you meant to say New Global Order."The New Global Order is the Clintonista Third Way Movement and it's chief tool, the UN.

Joe Loserman has just compared the Homeland Department to the industrialization of America after Pearl Harbor(Something undertaken by the private sector). What an idiot!!!

OUr national Guard was formed to protect our homeland from invasion. NOw it is our CIA strong arm "International police" The National Guard is now used as our militaries leading edge of cannon fodder in every conflict since 1940 when the US last sent commitioned marines to the beaches of Normandy and their death.
This new Dept of Homeland Security is being set up to fill the hole left by the National Guards original purpose. Only now it will be an internal covert information gathering agency, similar to what Hoover wanted back in the day. Instead of Communists we are searching for Islamic terrorists. Does anyone else see a pattern here?? I hear alot of people saying the same thing. Close our borders and clean house. I agree, we do not need this new agency, we don't need the four acronyms we have now (CIA, FBI, IRS, INS) They suck up money, can't find their own a$$, and have become havens for Americas surviving Organized crime.
The FBI has been the only agency to help in arresting criminals.
The CIA is a corrupt drug running agency hell bent on screwing up every foreign relationship we have ever had.
I challenge anyone here to find a local INS Dept that does not employ a majority of forgeigners. (The INS here currently employs 72% immegrants including their security dept.)
I don't think I have to mention the problems with our IRS.
So, what will the new DHS be??

"You know what? If you're not a terrorist, and you keep your nose clean, basically a law-abiding citizen and still entitled to your Constitutional rights....why do you fear so???" Okay, so if we want to dedicate ourselves to the "war" on terror, let's allow the government to conduct random, warrantless searches in our homes. After all, if we're not terrorists, and keep our noses clean, basically law-abiding citizens, why should we be afraid of such infringements?

Sure it will. It will give them a lot more resources to resolve these types of issues than they had before because it will be within one department rather than several...

Bump on the repeal of Patriot. Also, remember the 2004 elections. Stop statist democrats from using these powers against us. That's the spirit! Seriously, in my 4+ years at FR, I've decided that a lot of columnists and talk-radio types would much rather present an alarming point of view than soberly pursue the truth. How many folks would tune into a talk-radio segment titled "The Homeland Security Act: Duller Than Watching Paint Dry", as opposed to "The Homeland Security Act: Our Reichstag Fire!!", and then claim there are specific, draconian provisions in the bill, without citing specific sections, so it is almost impossible to research their claims, and if you go back to them and ask where they found a provision, they will point to a vaguely-worded paragraph, mutter and then go running off to their next column.

formerly head of DEA -- Update on AP/ Yahoo News - excerpt
Bush Approves Homeland Security Overhaul
Bush said he will nominate Navy Secretary Gordon England to be Ridge's deputy, and Asa Hutchinson, the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, to be undersecretary of border and transportation security.

So, what will the new DHS be??A big, amorphous blob filled with agency heads stabbing each other in the back while they jockey for position over the next two years. After that, who knows?
