WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The former treasurer of the West Deptford Democratic Campaign Committee has been charged with stealing $27,000 in party funds and concealing potentially illegal contributions.
Daniel Wilson, 53, has been charged by the state attorney general with theft, tampering with public records, and concealment of contributions.
In addition to stealing the funds, Wilson is charged with failing to report to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission more than $100,000 in campaign contributions.
The Division of Criminal Justice said an investigation determined the contributions went unreported in an attempt to cover up potentially illegal donations. The improper actions took place between September 1996 and November 2000, officials said.
Wilson attorney William Rozanski said the discrepancies were due to "record-keeping deficiencies" and his client did not steal any money.
Democratic party officials in Gloucester County expressed shock at the indictment of Wilson. State Sen. Stephen Sweeney said he doubted the allegations are true.
