Regarding the low fat diet, there is some evidence that fat deposits in the arteries are from insulin spikes caused by a high carbohydrate diet. You might want to consider the adkins diet which advocates reducing carbs.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. I'm 45 with high cholestrol and I had a lot of heart-type exams and tests about a year ago. Haven't made the changes I perhaps should make but I will and I'll get that heart scan.
