Mr. Garza also proposed new guest-worker programs for Mexican immigrants.

Make the Guest-worker program available, does away with illegals being abused by the Hollywood left looking for cheap labor. Does away with the political tool of "racism" that the Democrats cry. And allows the IMS to truely close the borders....... It is a wonderful idea..

As an idea it is not wonderful, but may be *practical*.

Any assessment of these ideas remains and will remain dubious at best.

The cost will be high, that is certain. Evidence exists already in the case of past California guestworker programs.

Also it is certain that the American public will not go along with it in good times or bad. They have already seen the results in good times and bad.

The threat is in the *numbers*.

The Hollywood left? It is the American right companies who are pushing for this. If it is the left, why then is President Bush pushing it and has been since he took office. If not for 9/11, he might have already gotten it done. You can't blame this on the left - put the blame where it is supposed to be - one both parties - but greatly on the shoulders of President Bush as he is now in charge.

I will never, never call an illegal worker - made legal, by our government - a 'guest worker'. Do you realize what you do for a guest - you provide them with a place to sleep, food to eat, and in general try to make them comfortable. I have no intention of doing that for low-cost workers just so chicken producers and construction companies and rake in a huge amount of money.

How are we going to identify thee workers? Who is going to decide who needs to stay? Who is going to monitor this? Are we going to send the families home? Are we going to make employers responsible for the cost taxpayers are now paying? The problem is in the huge numbers - the huge costs to taxpayers - the rise in crime - etc. Temporary work permits do not answer those problems.

Please don't be fooled by this approach.

They will work cheaply, pay taxes, and draw more federal and state funds than they put back in. It is a lose lose proposition. This country needs taxpayers, not low paid parasites.
