The father's reply to Dennison's line of "...the kids were not being SOCIALIZED" could have been answered with this reply....
"EXACTLY!!!!!..and that's why we are homeschooling them!!"

"If you get a neighbor, or relative, or somebody calling you who says, 'I know this family, they don't have books, they're neglecting their kids, they're babysitting all day,' then he's got a duty to act," Klicka said. "But short of that, it's just no more than bigoted profiling of a family simply because they are homeschooling." Exactly.

These public school idiots care about money, not kids..bottom line. Correct, but it's also about power, domination, harrassment and revenge. Remember the Wellstone "funeral" and you'll understand the motivation behind this truancy stuff.

The HSLDA argues, however, that while the regional superintendent has authority to refer a truancy case to the state's attorney if presented with evidence, he does not have the power to regulate homeschooling or to investigate whether families are complying with the law. What appears to be happening in this community is an attempt by a biased public school totalitarian to infringe upon the natural rights of parents to educate their own children - even minus legal precedent to do so. Without precedent, and with media and (in many cases) activist courts in their favor, this totalitarian approach by the public education machine can and will continue, at least for now, until legal precedent is set in favor of the homeschooling parents.
During the 1950's and 60's another class of people, blacks, were subject to the same sort of mistreatment. Though it was unconstitutional for those in positions of power to subject black individuals or groups to unfair and prejudice-driven mistreatment, it was gotten away with until court cases could set precedent and punish those who violated man's natural rights. Those blacks who triumphed over prejudice, even through the long process of acceptance and the seeking of legal protection, did so with an attitude of righteous perseverance. They did not give in and they did not retaliate with like hatred. They were forced to climb to a higher standard of conduct in every field of endeavor.
As unfair and unconstitutional as it is, homeschoolers are being judged more harshly. I have seen them react with poise and dignity, with results that more than prove their equality and in many cases superiority.
Hold on to the higher ideal, brave American homeschoolers! You are the generation that will set the precedent so that many who come after you will be free.

Bullies go after people who can't defend themselves. These families that don't belong to HSLDA.org should, even if HSLDA says they will represent them. At least it will be on record that they belong and the district attorney can just cross out the name from his list. From what I gather from the article, HSLDA doesn't think the district attorney will go after HSLDA's clients.
It's better to have good legal representation than trying to go it alone.

The cost of joining the HSLDA is minimal at only $100 a year for full representation. As homeschoolers we're HSLDA members and hope to never have to use the HSLDA's legal resources.
We're also foster parents (fos-adopt, actually) and we've had two boys for the past 18 months. They will be officially ours on Dec 11, 2002!
We were concerned the adoption agency (our local county) would have issues with homeschooling kids that were not officially ours and more exactly, wards of the county. When they saw the improvement in our kids over the past 18 months they were so amazed I think they're too astonished to say anything. Dec 11 will be here soon...

Horwedel and Bruce Dennison need to be physically reminded of the costs of freedom.

Horwedel insisted that the boys belonged in public school, just like his grandchildren. Public school is good enough for those kids, Horwedel said to Channell, and "your kids had better be there too." Grandpa Nazi
