"He Was From Kansas..."
(To be sung to Jimmy Buffet's "He Went to Paris")
He was from Kansas...in FlyOver Country...
Where Dorothy chased her rainbow.
He was impressive...the Senior Class President...
In Dover town he did grow.
Slopped hogs, fed chickens...just full of the dickens...
"What a fine boy," folks would say.
'Cuz he was a winner, his life just beginnin'...
And eighteen blessed years slipped away.
He went to college, then joined the Navy...
And married a teacher named Sue.
They had a fine life...she was a good wife...
And bore him four sons...what a crew!!
That man coached some football...and he camped with Weeb'los...
While defending his Country each day!
'Cuz he was a patriot...promoted to Captain...
An aircraft carrier he did sail!!
Went to war with the Navy...while Sue loved his babies...
Traded audiotapes ev'ry week.
'Cuz he knew what mattered, the Old World was shatterin'...
And Socialists SLAUGHTER the Meek!!
While the bombs were a'fallin', he was recallin'...
His kin and his li'l town.
And he fought fer his Nation, secured the oceans...
Returned to Norfolk and cheerin' crowds.
(Mudboy on harp...)
Now he lives here in Richmond...golfs on the weekends...
And starts cheerin' his Redskins each May.
Tracin' his kin's roots, buyin' up Church Hill,
With his many grandkids he'd play.
Through sixty-odd years of perpetual motion...
Ask this sailor and he'll smile and he'll say,
"Son, my life's been magic...not much has been tragic...
And I look forward to every day!!"
He is from Kansas...where Honor still matters...
And Dorothy found her rainbow!!
