Feds Lose 2,000 Aliens Sought for Questioning About 9/11 (Which Way Is Up?)

Thanks to more bungling from the INS, the federal government could not find nearly half the 4,112 registered immigrants sought for questioning about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to a report issued today.

"The General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress, found that the Immigration and Naturalization Service didn't have the current addresses of nearly 2,000 resident aliens," the Associated Press reported.

The law says foreigners on extended visits must report their address to the government. They are supposed to let the INS know when they move, but might not know this because the agency has failed to publicize the requirement, the report said.

'Little Incentive'

Some visitors knowingly break the law because the agency has failed to enforce the regulation for almost three decades, the GAO said. The maximum penalty: 30 days in jail and a $200 fine.

"Aliens may be aware that they need to file but do not comply because they have little incentive to do so," the report said.

Robert Diegelman, acting assistant attorney general for administration, responded: "If enforcement of the requirement to file a notice of change of address is to be effective, these penalties would need to be substantially increased. Only then will a change in operating procedures and referring cases to the United States attorneys be effective."

AP noted: "The INS has faced stiff criticism since the Sept. 11 attacks for failing to keep track of aliens who come to the United States. Three of the Sept. 11 hijackers held student visas, as did the man convicted of driving a van full of explosives into the World Trade Center in 1993.

"The agency faces a congressionally mandated Jan. 30 deadline for completing a new system for tracking foreign students, but the Justice Department inspector general has said it will not be done on time."

I'm sure quite a few had several stolen Social Security numbers and several fradulent Identities ---pretty easy to "disappear" when you do that ---and you don't even really have to disappear---only one of your Identities needs to. They're probably collecting welfare off some of the other Identities they're using or even doing jobs Americans will do using one of the others.
