BUFFALO, N.Y. --

Anti-abortion militant James Kopp admitted killing a doctor who provided abortions, but maintains he only intended to wound him, he said in a jailhouse interview with The Buffalo News.

"The truth is not that I regret shooting Dr. (Barnett) Slepian. I regret that he died," Kopp told the newspaper in an interview published Wednesday. "I aimed at his shoulder. The bullet took a crazy ricochet, and that's what killed him. One of my goals was to keep Dr. Slepian alive, and I failed at that goal."

Kopp, 47, said his outrage over abortion prompted him to shoot Slepian on Oct. 23, 1998, as the doctor warmed soup in the kitchen of his suburban Amherst home.

Kopp quickly became one of the FBI's most-wanted fugitives and was captured in France in March 2001. He has pleaded innocent to charges of second-degree murder and interfering with the right to an abortion and is scheduled to go on trial in February.

He told the newspaper he decided to make a public confession because he believes his supporters have been misled, and he wants them to know the reasons behind his actions. He also said he feels sorrow for Slepian's wife and four sons.

"To pick up a gun and aim it at another human being and to fire, it's not a human thing to do," Kopp said. "It's not nice. It's not pleasant. It's gory, it's bloody. It overcomes every human instinct.

"The only thing that would be worse, to me, would be to do nothing, and to allow abortions to continue."

Kopp said he selected Slepian's name out of a telephone book and that he had never read any news accounts about Slepian or ever participated in Buffalo protests before the shooting. No one in the Buffalo anti-abortion community recommended Slepian as a target, he told The Buffalo News.

Kopp said he targeted Slepian largely because his home was "vulnerable" because it had a rear window facing some woods.

Kopp said he scouted Slepian's neighborhood about six times over the course of a year before the attack. Twice, Kopp had his gun and was ready to shoot if he saw Slepian at the rear window, he said.

Kopp told the newspaper he shot the physician in the back of his left shoulder and was "horrified" when he later learned that the bullet glanced off a bone and caused internal injuries that killed the doctor.

"I didn't intend to kill Dr. Slepian," Kopp said. "Why do you think I used force against Dr. Slepian when he was within 10 hours of taking the lives of 25 babies? The question answers itself."

Kopp spoke with two reporters from The Buffalo News in the Erie County Holding Center last week with his new attorney, Bruce A. Barket.

Kopp's admission and his anti-abortion views are expected to be the basis of his defense, when his murder trial begins in Erie County Court.

I hope this puts to rest all the the posting from Freepers who defended this "pro-life" murderer.

As for this prolifer, I feel the death penalty would be in order.

That sounds remarkably Clintonian.

The theory that human problems are resolved by killing is false.

What you said, Earl. I'm a pro-life Christian. When some of our colleagues start on about this case, they sound like a bunch of liberals making excuses for Mumia. And Kopp is still making excuses. "What I did was bad but I did it because Slepian was a murderer." He did what he did and should go on to meet his maker.

And, for future Kopps, please note that murder is a pathetically ineffective political tool. Kopp probably did more to advance the pro-abortion agenda than any other one person in America today. Post murder, every person who prays in front of an abortion clinic is potentially violent in the eyes of much of the squishy middle-of-the-road.

So Kopp's hat-trick was amazing. He managed to commit a mortal sin AND give away much of the moral high ground to Planned Parenthood. Not an easy task--that is, the moral high ground part. Mortal sins are altogether too easy, as Planned Parenthood knows.

I think that I'm in that group. Thanks for posting this. His actions most certainly will hurt the pro-life movement.

Sadly, murder begets murder.

Slepian intentionally murdered thousands of helpless innocent babies.

Kopp murdered Slepian while trying to wound him.

Murder is never the answer.

Yes, whenever I am outside an abortion facility praying the "Choice on Earth" crowd presumes that I must be violent.

Kopp and his tiny ilk - a very tiny ilk - do not advance the cause of Life.

Perfect Justice?

by Brian J. Kopp, DPM

Hi Friends,

I just received this email from a web site I occasionally write for:

Subject: Re: Breaking News: Kopp Arrested in France - Thursday, March 29, 2001

I presume no relation, but let me know for sure so I can handle it properly.

       Px,

       S

     I simply replied,

"No relation, by name or philosophy."

As we hear about this case in the coming news cycles, we need to keep basic principles in mind.

There is a simple test anyone can apply to the morality of an act. When someone who calls themself a Christian tells me that a woman should have the right to choose, that God is Merciful and wouldn't force a woman to carry a child she did not want, or that was a result of rape or incest, implying the act is somehow NOT immoral, I ask them a simple question:

"Can YOU picture Jesus Christ dressed in surgical garb, at an abortion clinic, ripping a baby piece by piece from a woman's womb?!? Is that Merciful? Would Jesus Christ EVER commit such a crime?"

The answer is obvious to us and to pro-abortion men and women.

Likewise, can anyone imagine Jesus Christ dressed in fatigues and black face, hiding in bushes behind an abortionist's home, clutching a high powered rifle, waiting for an opportunity to take the life of that abortionist? Can anyone imagine HIM killing an abortionist who would then die unrepentant in his sin, damned eternally to Hell?

No. The answer is obvious. EVERY man, no matter how vile his crime, must have an opportunity to repent and be saved. Jesus would never hide in the bushes with a rifle to take the life of a sinner.

Perfect justice exists ONLY in Heaven. Due to Original Sin, we will NEVER have Perfect Justice here on earth. An anti-abortion activist that resorts to violence is not acting in the way of the Lord. Period.

On the other hand, a large percentage of abortuary clinic bombings and arsons happen not at the hands of protesters but by the hands of clinic owners themselves, their petty rivals, and even boyfriends whose child was killed in the womb by the abortionist.

Likewise, many of the murders of abortionists were a result not of "anti-abortion violence" but of the consequences of the debased immoral lives abortionists live. Here's a few examples from a Wanderer article of December 10, 1998:

Among some of the more grisly-though not exactly atypical-deaths of prominent abortionists are these few from the files of the Pro-Life Action League in Chicago, provided to The Wanderer for this report:

  • San Diego abortion clinic director, militant radical feminist, and lesbian Deborah Fleming, 35, shot herself in the head on May 26th, 1990 in a motel room in Yuma, Ariz. She was, apparently, distraught over her inability to conceive a child.

  • Abortionist Lynn D. Weller of Kansas City was shot to death in his home in September, 1973 by two masked gunmen, hired by rival abortionist Dr. William Carlos, who was angry that Weller was having an affair with his ex-wife.

  • Notorious Chicago abortion mill owner Kenneth Yellen literally died in the gutter after his gangland-style execution in November, 1979: five shots in the head as he walked to work. Police discovered that Yellen-who also was involved in the gambling, prostitution, and pornography- businesses -was more than $1 million in debt.

  • George Patterson, who operated abortion mills in Alabama and Florida, was gunned down outside a porn theater in downtown Mobile in august, 1993, where he was a regular customer.

Is James Kopp guilty of murdering an abortion doctor? God alone knows. However it must be remembered that he was an effective pro-life presence, and the administration that launched the international manhunt for him was virulently pro-abortion, was also guilty of Ruby Ridge and the deaths of so many children at Waco, and held a visceral hatred for pro-life efforts in general. If Kopp is guilty he must be brought to justice. If he is innocent, I fear he will not find justice in our courts.

But we must remember that there is Perfect Justice in Heaven for both baby killers and baby killer killers.

     In His Peace,
     Dr. Brian Kopp

The Buffalo News story has much more detail. In essence, he's confessed to it all--buying the gun, shooting Slepian, all the things the prosecutors has alleged. His defense, such as it is, is going to be "I shot him but I didn't mean to kill him" and "I did it for the pro-life movement." I doubt if the jury's going to buy that argument.

Woman Dies During Medical Procedure at Abortion Clinic

By Matt Young / The Northern Virginia Journal

A 26-year-old Fairfax County woman died while undergoing a medical procedure at Landmark Women's Center in Alexandria, police said. The exact cause of death is unknown, police said, but an autopsy is scheduled for today (Monday).

A medical unit was called to the scene at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and the woman was transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital, where she died at 11:11 a.m., police said. Police didn't disclose the nature of the woman's operation. Police were called to the hospital shortly after the victim arrived and began their investigation. A doctor reached at the clinic Sunday declined to comment.

I read a story once where more than one person's mind was changed on this topic when individuals saw peaceful protest of prayer. Nothing more. No violence. No curses or hateful speech. Just prayer.

Killing, bombing, etc., solves nothing. It just adds to the cycle. My God have mercy on this man because we on earth should have none. There's no excuse for killing another. It is not our place to judge.

If he admits to it, it's at least second-degree murder in Wisconsin. Not the death penalty--not here, anyway.

I'm a pro-lifer and I was VERY interested in the case. However, his confession makes Kopp guilty.

Further, Kopp has to be one of the dumbest idiots on the face of the Earth--using a rifle "to wound" Slepian. From all accounts, Kopp was a non-violent type. If so, he's not likely to have had a lot of experience with rifles. THUS, he should have NOT been playing that sort of game.

That only works on TV.

I remember a story on "60 Minutes" about police snipers. It opened with a voice-over saying "There are some people who just need to be shot."

There are stories around that Dr. Slepien (sp?) was preparing to change his views on abortion. Perhaps he was. We'll never know, but we do know he never killed anymore babies. If he had been able to go to work the next day and perform another twenty abortions the net loss would have been eighteen lives (considering the life of the shooter.)

Sounds to me like a 900% profit.

Uh, a serial killer, a proven serial killer who terminated upwards of twenty individual humans a day, was murdered. Neither murderer is worthy of any praise. Murder is murder, whether done with a rifle or scissors. 'Thou shalt not murder.'
