As much as I respect the Washington Times, I find this hard to believe. If he was thinking he'd worm his way back over to the GOP side of the aisle, he wouldn't have voted against Homeland Security...which he did today.

Maybe he voted against it after they told him to get lost. Then again, he probably thought they would take him back, no matter what had happened. He seems to be very full of himself.

I think this mis-guided fool had already been told "NO!", so his vote against Homeland Security was his "I'll get you by snapping my fingers in your general direction!" gesture.
He will likely be ignored by both sides for the rest of his career in the Senate. Vermont is basically unrepresented as of January.

My take on this is that, Jeffords made the offer over a week ago and it was turned-down, thus he voted Democrat to show his "independence."

I think Jeffords was rebuked shortly after the election. He knows now he's nobody.
