That's all I really found on Google. I won't vouch for the accuracy of it, but according to the story Brown shot the guy in the back. That would explain the harsh sentence.

I read an article last year about the problems that the ranchers were having down there. They said that ten years ago the illegals used to just hide in the out-buildings, but now they tend to steal anything not nailed down and a lot of them are carrying drugs and weapons.
