Coulter, Steyn, Jonah, and Me
The Conning Tower ^ | Nov. 18, 2002 | Trentino

Posted on 11/18/2002 8:54:19 AM PST by Davis

I haven't read the McCain-Feingold Act and I don't intend to. I know what it's aimed at, restricting the money that can be spent to promote political candidates and political ideas. I think this law is absurd, preposterous, and I have a suspicion the U.S. Supreme court will decide that it violates the First Amendment--you know, Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech...but I'm not counting on it.

Another part of the First Amendment, Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of the press....is untouched by McCain-Feingold. Therein lies opportunity.

Any newspaper or magazine, TV station or even a blogsite like this one is subject to no spending limitation concerning candidates or issues. So, NYTimes, WashPost, Fox, ABC, and CNN and the Peoria Sentinel can spend however much they please and publish whatever they please about candidates and issues. They're immune from the strictures of McCain-Feingold.

They're in business and they're looking to make a profit. To make up for the loss of paid political advertising, the TV broadcasters are going to pursue money from advertisers other than political organizations, right? What they need are popular shows to persuade advertisers like brewers, car and computer makers to use their facilities. They'll need new programs, especially new news programs. The old style confrontational program, Lib and Conservative hacking away at each other is over the hill, annoying and worn out. Likewise, the interviewer playing celebrity-pattycake, and the omniscient offstage voice pretending impartiality while selecting and shaping snippets of video tape, ausgespielt. What's to be done?

To the rescue, yes, you guessed it: The Right Stuff--Coulter, Steyn, Jonah--with Trentino as moderator.

It makes sense, doesn't it. There's little doubt that Miss Coulter, Mr. Steyn, and Jonah Goldberg are among the best writers on political affairs, lively, informative, smart, and honest. What a pleasure it would be to be in their company for an hour every week. With Trentino's unerring touch to move matters along, it would be a winner for sure.

Not balanced you say? It's true, we're all Conservatives. But there's nothing in the world to prevent some other network from presenting a similar program, The Liberal Hour, it might be named in honor of master economist J.K. Galbraith's masterwork. I wouldn't presume to cast that show.

...

I caution readers that I haven't checked their availability for this project with Ann Coulter, Mark Steyn, or Jonah. All in good time, friends. You've got to start somewhere.

This means that McCain is either ignorant (of the Consitution) or devious.

He is becoming more like Clinton (your choice: Bill, Hillary) each day.

How 'bout both?

Did you see that just today, Supreme court announces they will tackle, in the next session, the subject of limiting campaign donations?

I happened to hear a discussion about "negative ads" on NPR not long before the election. A left-wing listener called in to say that she hated all negative ads.

"Doesn't it make a difference whether they are true or false?" asked the most reasonable of the panelists.

"No," the caller insisted. "All negative ads are hateful and destructive. Ban them all."

Not ONE of these panelists, professors of political science, journalists, and the like, even raised the question that that demand might be unconstitutional.

It's coming, unless we get judges who respect the Constitution. Clinton appointed a huge number who don't.

Another couple of months of his moral deterioration and physical transformation reflecting same..should make McCain a great candidate for the role of Gollum in the next LOR installment..

Funny how people insist on "the constitutional right to -not be offended" yet demand "the constitutional right to offend" LOL

Trentino is stepping on my idea of a show involving Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin and me.

Well, maybe show isn't quite the right word for it.

Goldberg ought to have plenty of time to devote to this effort, now that he's been canned by NR Online.

Coulter, on the other hand, isn't much of a fan of the girly-boys at NR, so she might not be too eager to work with little Jonah.

Jonah hasn't been canned. He's a star at NRO and NR with a cover mention. He wants TV career. His wife is expecting baby soon. Baby needs shoes, see.

Ann Coulter, Lucianne, and Jonah are back on good terms again, is what I hear on the grapevine.

So much for the idea that NR had decided to put an end to the yuppie playpen.
