You also frequently hear, "I was on drugs when the crime occurred..." You almost never hear, "I killed her", "I stabbed her", "I bludgeoned her", "I murdered her", "I took her life". No, it's always "my involvement in the murder", "I was holding the gun when it went off", "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
