"Harry Potter"
Ayn rand Institute ^ | 11/13/02

Posted on 11/15/2002 2:23:23 PM PST by RJCogburn

The movie adventures of child-wizard Harry Potter will continue on November 15. Far from being an agent of the occult, as his critics contend, Harry Potter is the kind of hero children should be encouraged to read about and emulate, said the executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute.

"It is true that Harry lives in a magical, fantastical world, but what's important is that he is a hero who wins through intelligence, effort and courage," said Dr. Yaron Brook. "Throughout the series, Harry has developed his talents through hard work and has learned to think for himself, to be honest and to be self-confident. He has friends who share his values and he earns the respect of his teachers. Aren't these the character traits all parents want their children to possess? I know they're qualities I actively try to instill in my two boys."

Dr. Brook said that the critics' focus on the supernatural aspects of the Harry Potter stories is completely non-essential. What is fundamental is the abstract meaning being conveyed during the course of Harry's magical adventures. "The books are, in short, fuel for a child's maturing mind. As vitamins and minerals are essential to a child's healthy physical development, so literature with this view of the world is essential to a child's healthy mental development."

Just seen it. Pretty good movie (better than the first... maybe). Worth all this hand-wringing? Errrr, no.

If a mother buys food for her hungry child rather than a hat for herself, it is not a sacrifice; she values the child higher than the hat; but it is a sacrifice to the kind of mother whose higher value is the hat, who would prefer her child to starve and feeds him only from a sense of duty. If a man dies fighting for his own freedom, it is not a sacrifice: he is not willing to live as a slave; but it is a sacrifice to the kind of man who's willing. If a man refuses to sell his convictions, it is not a sacrifice, unless he is the sort of man who has no convictions.

From "Atlas Shrugged," by Ayn Rand.

As conservative Presbyterians, we don't "do" Santa Claus or Halloween, but don't freak at anyone who does. We skipped Harry Potter during its first frenzy, but eventually got the books from the library, then bought them and the movie. (I have a 13 yr old and an autistic 10 yr old.)

We find we enjoy Harry Potter, the books and the first movie. There's nothing particularly exceptionally good or evil or "phenomonal" about it one way or the other. We're not going to fight crowds to see it right away, but before it leaves the theaters I'll go with my 13 yr to see it. We don't see the hoopla one way or the other. Just doing a Harry Potter shrug.

Save the money you would spend on the film and put it towards a Concordance; then, look up the words "occult" and "sorcery" and "enchantments" and "witchcraft" and see what the Bible has to say about it.

THEN, tell me there's nothing wrong with Harry Potter!

I'm with you in admiring the Harry Potter series, and I'd call Post 25 -- at best -- a non-loving shot.

In light of your previous post, I don't think you know I was being extremely sarcastic.

My Fiance loves these books, so, I got drug along to the first movie and will get drug to the next. I thought the DVD was great the first couple times, but man that theme music is enough to make me re-enact scenes from the Exorcist. Maybe that is Satan's big plan.

This does have to do with the subject of the thread...

If the Bible doesn't say abortion is wrong, but you know it is, then how can you say that when the Bible says witchcraft is wrong, you can say it isn't...?
