"Harry Potter"
Ayn rand Institute ^ | 11/13/02

Posted on 11/15/2002 2:23:23 PM PST by RJCogburn

The movie adventures of child-wizard Harry Potter will continue on November 15. Far from being an agent of the occult, as his critics contend, Harry Potter is the kind of hero children should be encouraged to read about and emulate, said the executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute.

"It is true that Harry lives in a magical, fantastical world, but what's important is that he is a hero who wins through intelligence, effort and courage," said Dr. Yaron Brook. "Throughout the series, Harry has developed his talents through hard work and has learned to think for himself, to be honest and to be self-confident. He has friends who share his values and he earns the respect of his teachers. Aren't these the character traits all parents want their children to possess? I know they're qualities I actively try to instill in my two boys."

Dr. Brook said that the critics' focus on the supernatural aspects of the Harry Potter stories is completely non-essential. What is fundamental is the abstract meaning being conveyed during the course of Harry's magical adventures. "The books are, in short, fuel for a child's maturing mind. As vitamins and minerals are essential to a child's healthy physical development, so literature with this view of the world is essential to a child's healthy mental development."

Whether sorcerers (witches etc.) can request of the devil, or whether they can order the devil, doesn't matter to whether sorcery is real. The issue is, can they influence the behavior of these evil powers to their own (and others') ill. My money says that yes, they can.

Listen, you can say you don't believe, ok. But God certainly makes it clear that the powers of the occult are real. These people do not believe in Satan, but they are witches, whether you think I am making this up or not.

I am not vouching for any power they may or may not have. If they do have any, it's is from Satan, whether they realize that or not.

But they are very real.

LOL! This starts to be the funniest thread I've read (and been ignored on) in a long time.

ROTFL! Maybe you are invisible! Are you a witch?

The prophet Elijah was so much together with God that he could call fire down out of heaven to burn even water.

But you must remember to contrast that with the success the prophets of Baal had when they tried to call down fire by appealling to the Devil.

The Holy Spirit can put a real damper on Satan's act.

Again, what would it prove? That some anonymous denizen of the internet can make an absurd claim?

Good chance you would be headed for the dunking tank after that flippant remark.

Quite possible... Would that have made me a witch? This is really starting to resemble the Monty Python skit now! LOL!

The Bible says it is real. Also, sadly, a family member is involved in some of those practices.

You said it wasn't real, I said "Go heere and ask a witch". You declined. Case closed.

I ignored you?

Was my comment directed at you?

But to answer your question- yes.

I asked a question earlier- "Have you seen the movie?"

I posted some of my remarks to your objections to the film that were filled with my dazzling wit.

I commented on the fact that you were in fact trying to talk people into visiting and participating at a site frequented by witches which would seem to be in contradiction to your trying to tell people why they shouldn't expose themselves to the evil of the Harry Potter film. Also on that post I asked what would happen if someone fell under a spell over there and how we are to know that you aren't under a spell yourself since you've been there.

You responded to none of these.

Maybe it's just me but if I were sitting in the theatre watching Harry Potter and I elbowed the guy next to me and asked him what he thought of the film on several occasions and he said nothing- I would say to myself "Hmmm- he's ignoring me"- what about you?

I agree that a person does not have to beleive they are under the influence of the devil to be so. If these people have no powers, they would not be witches (real ones) would they? They wouldn't be covered by the biblical verses you quoted, would they? The biblical verse only applies to real witches, true?

I said: "So your proof that witchcraft is real comes from testamonials an internet chat board. OK... Enough said."

You said: "Fire is real too but I never thought I would try getting myself burned to death to prove it."

Does this argument make sense to you really? Is there no other proof that fire exists other than burning yourself to death?

I'm going to get flamed for this but this religious fervor over Harry Potter is so stupid.

they're like the liberals about smoking and property rights. Fairy tales abound in every culture it is just human nature to dream that's why civilization has grown and prospered. People dream of the impossible, flying, computers, microwaves all impossible dreams that came true.

Chronicles of Narnia.

It's like pulling teeth to get my son to read, but he did like these. Sometimes he'll do an occasional Hardy Boys.

So you believe they are real because they say they are, whether they actually have the power of a witch or not. We know they say they are witches. The question is are they real witches or real whackjobs?

This thread was one of tose typical H.P. threads we like we saw last years. H.P. is evil, no its not, is too, is not ad nauesum. But at about post 280 it started getting a lot more fun when Jael said he knew a few witches.
