I'm a staunch Conservative, but the sentence is totally too long.

Hardly. The killer has shown without question that he is incorrigible. He should be imprisoned for as long as the law allows, if for no other reason than to protect society from his lawlessness.

Even so, I think the penalty is far too easy.

Thank you so much for articulating what I felt.

Some Freepers have a tendency to display the same extremist, politically-correct opinions as screw-ball Liberals.

You should have seen the morons in here that tried to justify keeping Elian Gonzalez from his FATHER, in favor of his mother's relatives in Miami....quick to make him a political football, while essentially defacating on the role, importance and RIGHTS of a surviving parent.

They wrapped themselves in the American Flag, and essentially pissed on the FATHER'S parental rights, with the only reason that the kid happened to be born and raised in Castro's Cuba.

Shame on the courts for letting this guy create a resume of 36 arrests for the same offense.

Jesus....count to 36. What a sham! Who could blame the guy for NOT taking any of the previous 2 dozen times seriously.

I've been here since August, 1998. I've seen too many kooks in here that give Conservatives bad names. Anybody that takes the opinion that 20 years in jail for vehicular homicide on the 36th arrest is not thinking straight, IMO. The ones that should be jailed for 20 years are the judges and attorneys that let it get to that point.

He was sentenced to 20 years. That doesn't mean he'll spend 20. Odds are he'll spend 10 or so then they'll release him under parole.

'Shame on the courts for letting this guy create a resume of 36 arrests for the same offense.'

I agree, he should have been locked up for 20 years after the 6th or 7th time. /sarcasm

Seriously though, your inability to grasp the argument put forth by those differing from you is very worrisome.

My point is that he did intend harm. Why? It is because of his level of knowledge and expectation that drunk driving is extremely dangerous. He knew that he most likely would at some time lose control of his vehicle and possibly cause harm and even the death of another. Hence, he knew that his actual result was not only possible, but likely. Therefore, I believe that he is guilty of first degree manslaughter and possibly 2nd degree murder. Those are 20 year sentences in most states. Considering his many other chances to change his ways, he deserves the maximum penalty for punishment, and we deserve him off the roads for good.

People do not accidentally become drunk or accidentally drive drunk. They know that they are drinking beyond their ability to control their vehicle but they continue to drink anyway. That is a cognitive choice to drive drunk. They were sober when they decided to drink and drive. Responsible adults know when to either stop drinking or arrange for transportation before they are intoxicated.

Drunk driving should be an automatic suspension of the license for 30 days for the first offense; 30 days jail for the second offense with a one year suspension of the license, and doubling of the length of sentence each time thereafter.

Driving drunk isn’t funny, cute, or a juvenile prank. It is a serious act; deadly serious.

I know for a fact he got out after serving only 7 years. The man he killed was my future stepdad

Interesting follow up.

Since posting that comment my wife’s cousin was killed by a drunk driver. Drunk spent all Saturday night drinking and on a Sunday at dawn he crossed the centerline going well over the speedlimit on a quiet stretch of highway and striking the cousin’s car as he drove to work at the local hospital as a nurse. He was unharmed while the cousin was killed instantly.

Was sentenced to 6 months.

Poor bastard gets 20 years for sobbing.

What's weird was I clicked on the article this morning and ran across the post I made, and thought that was strange, then I saw the bloody date was from 13 years ago!

Good comment on the bone head.
