ABC eyes first gay detective TV series

In a move that will put ABC on par with NBC, HBO and Showtime in regard to groundbreaking gay-themed television, the network is developing a murder-mystery detective series featuring gay partners in the lead roles -- a first in TV programming.

"Mr. and Mr. Nash," starring actor-director-screenwriter Alan Cumming in one of the title roles, will feature a gay couple living in San Francisco that has an interior design business. The hook: They stumble upon a new murder mystery each week, not unlike "Hart to Hart," a successful murder mystery from the early '80s that included lighthearted humor.

Whether this show, which is being produced by Steve Martin along with Carsey-Werner-Mandabach (CWM) -- the production team behind hits "The Cosby Show," "Rosanne," "Dynasty" and currently "That '70s Show" -- will perpetuate or break gay stereotypes remains to be seen, according to Scott Seomin, GLAAD's entertainment media director.

"This is a murder mystery show and these guys are going to be smart and will hopefully be doing some stereotype-busting," Seomin told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network. "Stereotypes are based in truth and humor. We as a community can laugh at ourselves and others better than any other minority."

While shows like "Ellen" and "Will & Grace" brought gay and lesbian characters into America's living rooms, "Mr. and Mr. Nash" will be the first to feature a committed gay couple on prime-time network TV.

"There are a lot of firsts in gay and lesbian programming and this is one of them," Seomin said. "The fact that it's coming from Martin and Carsey-Werner is incredible news. Carsey-Werner has an incredible track record (with their shows), many of which have been inclusive of gay and lesbian story lines."

For this show to work, the angle of the gay relationship will have to be showcased, Seomin said.

"The show is going to be pinned to chemistry between the leads," he said. "(The relationship) will be shown and it is necessary. If they're not going to be a couple, then make them friends."

CMW will soon start looking for Cumming's perfect match and will shoot the pilot this spring. Depending on ABC's plans, the show may air in the fall of 2003.

"Next thing you know they'll be letting gays sit at the front of the bus"

Next thing you know they'll want to be school bus drivers, scoutmasters, teachers or any other position where they can influence the weak minds of the pure, the innocent, the unwary, the trusting, and the naive. Oops! Too late. Oh, I get it. It's the gays who are being victimized, right? How stupid of me.

If you forbid people based on their sexual persuasion to be school bus drivers, and teachers, then yes, they are being victimized. It's called discrimination. It's no different than if they were black, or conservative and being forbidden to teach.

Per scoutmasters, The Boy Scouts can do whatever they want as they are a private organization.

This network and its Mickey Mouse owners are already the, er, butt of much mirth; and they persist in peddling their propaganda through the, uh, back door. Kinda reminds me of the Dims prior to their recent trouncing at the polls; something they apparently saw coming BTW. Grasping at straws they are. The networks going the way of the Dims? We can hope and pray.

Gay Frank goes into the doctor's office and has some tests run. The doctor comes back and says "Frank, I am not going to beat around the butt, er, bush. You have AIDS."
Frank is devastated. "Doc, what can I do?"
The doctor says "I want you to go home and eat 5 pounds of spicy sausage, a head of cabbage, 20 un-peeled carrots drenched in hot sauce, 10 Jalapeno peppers, 40 walnuts and 40 peanuts, 1/2 box of Grapenuts cereal, and top it off with a gallon of prune juice."
Frank asks, "Will that cure me, Doc?"
"No, but it should leave you with a better understanding of what your butt is for."

Does this mean you favour hiring pederasts and pedophiles to be teachers? Guidance counselors? School psychologists? If you wish to sacrifice your children on the altar of diversity and tolerance (of the intolerable), you do so with my utter contempt. Some discrimination is a good thing. Discriminating against perverts is a good thing.

I call it protecting the innocent.

I think you made a wrong turn somewhere.

If you look at the numbers in the teaching profession, I do beleive that they are already forbidding conservatives. The attempt to relate homosexuality and race is transparent and wrong. Race is a physical attribute that one has no control over, homosexuality is a behavior. It is, as far as I know, the only behavior that is given special rights and protections.

Hey! Don't laugh. If I ever needed a PI, the first guy I'd call is an interior decorator and maybe a hairdresser after that.

Eisner may be a bit generous giving ABC 4 - 5 years, if this is the new programming that is supposed to return ABC to the ranks of the relevant networks.

Yes, unfortunately, it IS the comedian Steve Martin.

Damn, that's a shame. He was one of precious few celebs who has kept his politics to himself. Well, now we know why he was selected to host the Academy Awards again, despite expectations that he'd *never* be invited back.
