ABC eyes first gay detective TV series

In a move that will put ABC on par with NBC, HBO and Showtime in regard to groundbreaking gay-themed television, the network is developing a murder-mystery detective series featuring gay partners in the lead roles -- a first in TV programming.

"Mr. and Mr. Nash," starring actor-director-screenwriter Alan Cumming in one of the title roles, will feature a gay couple living in San Francisco that has an interior design business. The hook: They stumble upon a new murder mystery each week, not unlike "Hart to Hart," a successful murder mystery from the early '80s that included lighthearted humor.

Whether this show, which is being produced by Steve Martin along with Carsey-Werner-Mandabach (CWM) -- the production team behind hits "The Cosby Show," "Rosanne," "Dynasty" and currently "That '70s Show" -- will perpetuate or break gay stereotypes remains to be seen, according to Scott Seomin, GLAAD's entertainment media director.

"This is a murder mystery show and these guys are going to be smart and will hopefully be doing some stereotype-busting," Seomin told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network. "Stereotypes are based in truth and humor. We as a community can laugh at ourselves and others better than any other minority."

While shows like "Ellen" and "Will & Grace" brought gay and lesbian characters into America's living rooms, "Mr. and Mr. Nash" will be the first to feature a committed gay couple on prime-time network TV.

"There are a lot of firsts in gay and lesbian programming and this is one of them," Seomin said. "The fact that it's coming from Martin and Carsey-Werner is incredible news. Carsey-Werner has an incredible track record (with their shows), many of which have been inclusive of gay and lesbian story lines."

For this show to work, the angle of the gay relationship will have to be showcased, Seomin said.

"The show is going to be pinned to chemistry between the leads," he said. "(The relationship) will be shown and it is necessary. If they're not going to be a couple, then make them friends."

CMW will soon start looking for Cumming's perfect match and will shoot the pilot this spring. Depending on ABC's plans, the show may air in the fall of 2003.

A little sadd detective work reveals that is not likely to be an issue for GoreLover:

Tune out and turn off. Life's too short to waste on network television "programming".

Does this mean you favour hiring pederasts and pedophiles to be teachers? ...

No. Just because one is gay does not make one a pederast or a pedophile.

Some would interpret any sexual act not used for the sole purpose of procreation to be perversion. Some to this day consider dancing to be a perversion.

So it's A-OK to discriminate against "them". Whoever "they" are. Just so's "GoreIsLove" doesn't get discriminated against. I get it.

If you look at the numbers in the teaching profession, I do beleive that they are already forbidding conservatives. The attempt to relate homosexuality and race is transparent and wrong. Race is a physical attribute that one has no control over, homosexuality is a behavior. It is, as far as I know, the only behavior that is given special rights and protections.

Being able to be a teacher (or a bus driver) if you're gay is not a special right.

I would say that homosexuality is a behavioral attribute that one cannot change. This is why I compared it to race.

Disney Shareholders should be outraged...not for the content but because of the money this will cost. This is nothing more than a political statement using the assets and resources of Disney Sharholders...doomed to fail

Being queer is not normal and not mainstream, nor will it ever be...to hope or believe otherwise is foolish at best...what a joke...and who do these people think they are..?

As soon as the show airs we need a list of sponsers..

So people who like sex with animals, or children, or dead bodies, or who think torture is an essential part of their sexual identity - all those folks should be school bus drivers or teachers, too, right?

You're comparing apples to oranges. Most homosexuals do not participate in such depravity, and if it was found they did, they should rightfully be barred.

After all, it's just their sexual persuasion, isn't it? No because the other things you mentioned did not take place between two consenting adults.

Or are we redefining perversion as each pressure group whines enough?

You're the one calling it a perversion.

"Some animals are more equal than others." Newspeak, don'tcha know.

Nice of you to invoke Orwell, however you're mixing your references as "Animal Farm" and "1984" are 2 independent works. As I resonded to someone else, being a teacher or a busdriver is not a special right. If you got paid more to be a gay teacher, or got shorter hours to be a gay teacher, then it would be.

I'd love to respond, but I'm a little unclear as to what you mean. Last time I checked though, pedophilia (sp?) was illegal and homosexuality was not.

"Quite honestly, I don't need to witness men lusting over other men, or lesbian women kissing. I just don't. I think it's disgusting. Why the H*LL are the networks pandering to 3% of the population?"

The more you understand about the nature of, "propaganda," "influence," & "power" and how these elements come together?
How those combined elements effect human beings & especially *young* human beings??
The faster your question then answers itself.

Ain't that right, FGS?? ;^)

FWIW; I've a similar take on the nation's gay population, overall.
I mean they're here, they're queer, right?
IF we as a society are not prepared to build gulags, brick ovens & "showers"? (~which *I'm* not)
Then deal with 'em in some way we/I must I have to believe.

Now if they just didn't bother me, my family, my city, my county, my state, my nation I surely wouldn't bother them, back.

But for better or worse, the fact is, they don't; &, therein lies the *rub* for many otherwise neutral -- "Live & Let Live" kind of -- people on both sides of the fence.

Or let us say the disproportionate numbers of gay Hollywierd powerbrokers don't believe in letting this alone, eh?
After all -- as "ABC's plans" attest to -- they're the ones stirring up the radicals from within the gay community.
And as it turns out, wouldn't you know?

...those radicals will be the people we'll all be seeing.

"the show, being produced by Steve Martin..."

BIG bummer. "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" with Steve Martin and John Candy is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I was getting revved up to watch it again since it is such a funny send-up on all the travel nightmares associated with the Thanksgiving holiday.

John Hughes did a great job with this movie, and the script was great. Witty and fun, without all the embarrassment attached to the cesspool "humor" movies of today. I must have seen it over two dozen times during the last ten years, and I still laugh every time I watch it. Sigh.

Sorry. I can't play your game. I'm opinionated, not argumentative. I know where you're coming from and you know where I'm coming from. Try it on someone else.

Why the H*LL are the networks pandering to 3% of the population?

You mean they're putting Jewish people in TV shows again? How dare they pander to that mere 3% of the population. There should be a law restricting media corporations from putting minority groups on TV.

/sarcasm

Geshhh; how's that for priorities.
