GOP Widens Lead in Georgia Senate
ASSOCIATED PRESS
ATLANTA- A fourth Democrat in the Georgia Senate has changed parties, bolstering the Republican majority and giving a boost to GOP Gov.-elect Sonny Perdue.
State Sen. Jack Hill's decision Tuesday gives Republicans a 30-26 edge over Democrats in the chamber and it reversed the Election Day results that gave Democrats a four-seat majority.
Republicans have not controlled a legislative body in Georgia since Reconstruction, and Perdue is the first Republican in 130 years to become governor of the state.
Democrats still control the Georgia House with 106 members to 73 Republicans and one independent.
The new majority means Republicans could strip Democratic Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor of his power to appoint committees and assign legislation to committees, leaving him only with the power to preside over debate.
Taylor has called on party switchers to resign and run for re-election as Republicans.

The districting was an attempted power grab by LIBERAL democrats. In some cases, such as the senate leader's district, they put the black senate majority leader in a district with a white conservative senator. Then reshaped the district so that it would have enough black voters to get rid of the white conservative democrat.
But the white conservative senator, Cheeks, stunned everyone by winning anyway. A HUGE UPSET!! he was the first to get revenge and switch.

I ran across this item a few minutes ago. The Georgia story is full of ironies and paybacks.
Ralph Reed scores three out of four
In the September Freedom Writer we listed some of Ralph Reed's clients through his political consulting company, Century Strategies. Among them were Governor Fob James of Alabama; Sen. Richard Shelby, of Alabama; Sen. Paul Coverdale, of Georgia; and Rep. Jay Dickey, of Arkansas.
At that time, we asserted that Gov. James faced a possible defeat. He, indeed, lost. His loss was also a big defeat for Ralph Reed. In other races, we correctly predicted an easy victory for Sen. Shelby and Rep. Jay Dickey. In Sen. Paul Coverdale's tight race, Reed pulled off a victory. Coverdale's reelection bid was an important one, particularly since Reed needed to win this one in order to bolster his credibility.
It is widely acknowledged that Ralph Reed hopes to manage the campaign for the Republican presidential nominee in the 2000 election. Even with a generally poor Republican showing in 1998, Reed's outlook still looks pretty good.

Anything that harms the interests of democrats and those who vote for them is a damn good thing.

He switched long before he held public office. And why can someone not switch when they see that the party is so out of step? Hopefully Pelosi will hurt the Dems. big time.

Hey, you'll notice I posted it here among friends. I'm not out giving interviews with the press or carrying signs infront of the court house. I'll take their cross over, just think we should remain morally superior.

You're right, and I'm not trying to bust your chops, just observing that sometimes, we're too polite for our own good. Another facet of this is that we need more Ann Coulters, David Horowitz's, Michelle Malkins, who will get in people's faces about issues and not back down. Instead, we have Trent Lott as Majority Leader.
To: FreedomPoster
Yeah, I could do with a little less Lott as well. We need new leadership in that area big time.

Exactly. I want some ball-bustin', hard-knuckled politics. The Dems deserve some scorched-earth payback - except for the 8 or so we need to invoke cloture.

I knew you couldn't be in our state then.
Here is the fact. No Republican in 130
years. That means Iron-handed control
for at least 5 generations. What do you
think the people of Georgia owe the
Democraps.
Look at the tactics the Democrats have
used in the past. Click on the name

Two more tonight, and my source on Capitol Hill says that there are still more on the way. . . . stay tuned.
The Republicans may wind up with a HUGE majority in the Senate.

This discussion is totally out of context. Georgia legislative politics was totally controlled by Murphy & Barnes, who are out finally. Some of these guys were democrats in name only.
If people don't like what their representative/senator does in Georgia there is always recall....
I used to live in GA, it would be a nice place if my ex-wife wasn't there....

Next step is fair redistricting. Texas needs to redistrict its Congressional districts too.

Didn't Alabama Senator Shelby switch from D to R? Yes! The day after the 1994 elections.
