We have specialists that deal with this problem. I suggest that you do such an operation that nothing grows out of you again," Mr Putin reportedly said.

Just reading the above sentence and looking at the context, I'm wondering if "circumcised" is indeed the correct translation. I think he may have said "castrated", and this has been politely.....ahem...edited, by the translator.

We must think alike, as that was the first thing that popped into my head.

Putin sounds just a little like Patton!

This might be one "Russian son-of-a-bitch" that Patton might have drank a toast with.

The original:  http://lenta.ru/world/2002/11/12/circumcision/  and http://lenta.ru/vojna/2002/11/11/circumcision/

Translation as presented in the discussed article:

"But if you are prepared to become the most radical Islamist and prepared to get circumcised - I invite you to Moscow.

"We have specialists that deal with this problem. I suggest that you do such an operation that nothing grows out of you again," Mr Putin reportedly said.

Correct translation:

"But if you are prepared to become the most radical Islamist and prepared to get circumcised - I invite you to Moscow.

"I will recommend [to the doctors, (my comment)] that the operation to be performed in such a manner, that nothing grows out of you again"

The Russian article reports, BTW that the interpreter did not translate verbatim, and removed the circumcision comment.

I think you are right -- that's what I thought too. In the Muslim world they had "eunuchs" who were castrated males, since historic times. Putin was probably referring to that -- come and let the Muslims turn you into a eunuch. I think it was just mistranslated, probably not deliberately.
