AFTER the Crusades, things changed.
And there WERE a large number of Jews living in Muslim lands, up until Israel was founded. At that point, the Arabs kicked out a lot of the Jews (and a lot of the Jews went voluntarily) to move to Israel.

Jewish life in Muslim countries historically was not as bad as Christendom at it's worst, but nowhere near as good as Christendom at it's best. In Muslim countries, Jews and Christians were treated as second-class citizens, tolerated, but required to accept Muslim superiority.
