No way. You would have to own 67 Senate seats and 280 House seats to pull this off. And even then it would be hard as bricks to pull off. No way legislators abdicate the power the tax code gives them. I do not care what kind of mandate they think they have.

Sure, but would you want to be the congresscritter who had to go back home and tell your people you voted no?

Unfortunately I agree, as much as I want an NRST, were not in the position to do it...unless there are "FBI files".
However, the USSC, with after a few retirements/appointments could after considering the validity of the radification porcess the 16th went through. I believe it violates more state constitutions than are necessary for ratification.

You would have to own 67 Senate seats and 280 House seats to pull this off. Why? You might need 60 Senate votes to close down a filibuster, but I don't see why a simple majority is not enough otherwise. President Bush is not going to veto it.

But the people want it and I think George will go over the heads of the Congress and appeal directly to us little people.

You would have to own 67 Senate seats and 280 House seats to pull this off Chambliss (who just won in GA) favors a NRST. Cleland tried to use it against him in the debate. Instead of backing down, he came out pretty focefully in support of scraping the tax code and replacing it with either a flat tax or NRST. He mad it very clear though, that his first choice was a NRST. Didn't hurt him at all.
People know the current tax code is a mess. If the Republicans play this that the tax code needs to be scraped and replaced with a simpler system, the could have a winner. That would put the Dems in the position of defending the current code mess.

If this is the centerpiece of a 2004 Contract with America plan, we will have 60% of both houses. Bold and brilliant if you ask me.

Which Dems would you say will put themselves in the public opinion crosshairs by defending the IRS? The same ones who opposed the tax cuts they voted for? Or the ones that voted for the Iraq authorization, even though they didn't agree?
We're talking about the IRS, an almost universally despised institution.
