I blame Bush

Nonsense. CA GOP are incomptetent buffoons. And they essentially lied or passed bogus info to the 2000 Bush campaign.

I understand perfectly why Bush would stay away.

I would like you to elaborate on that point.

The problem is not with the Dems, but it is within the means by which candidates make their way in. Bottom line is that within the California GOP, the moderates (what there still are of them) put up the money, and the hard right conservatives make up the majority of voting party members. The demographics are such, though, that hard right candidates may win a GOP primary, but can't win in a general election, and get fairly trounced. Unless California hard right folks get a grip on their baser instincts, they'll continue to bleed moderates off to the Dems, and will marginalize themselves further. On top of that, another complaint I hear is that they're not grooming younger candidates on up the line. You have to mentor them - they can't operate in a vacuum.
