Nice article, but it doesn't really define what it means when it uses the terms "democracy" or "republic."

Republic? Democracy? I think 'oligarchy' is a more apt description of what our government has become in last 40 years.

It would be a little more accurate if the title were:

"We were not a Democracy!"

A fine article, but that Strike The Root website is littered with political lunatics and other fringe knuckle draggers. It also reaked with the pungent, sour smell of Loonytarianism.

I always took "of the people, by the people, for the people" to mean that we, the people, select our governemnt from our peers, as opposed to there being a ruling class. We then expect that government to serve us, not vice versa.

BTW> Here the fine lady my fellow NYers picked to represent us in Washington demonstrates her understand of the form of government we have chosen for ourselves:

"...If it is just that half the people in this nation not pay income taxes then it follows that they should not be required to pay their electric bill; monthly mortgage; car payments and food bills etc...”From each according to his ability; to each according to his need."

The inherent vice of freedom is the unequal sharing of the blessings; the inherent blessing of equality will be the equal sharing of misery.

WOW! It is impossible to overstate the profound wisdom in this quote.

One of my favorites to explain Democracy:

"Democracy is two wolves and a sheep trying to decide what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well armed sheep disputing the vote." -- Benjamin Franklin
